My old 1.0 Xbox died recently, so I bought a new one. My old system was hard modded with one of the old no-solder Matrix chips. My new Xbox is a 1.2 so the Matrix is no good, so I want to softmod it. I still have my old (unlocked) hdd. Can I just copy a softmod to this hdd and use it in my new system without having to go through the hotswapping and everything? Or am I missing something?

Actually, I just realized I forgot about a very obvious step... I'll need to lock the hdd again. How do I get my eeprom onto my old hdd?

You have to softmod new xbox to obtain the eeprom: a chicken and egg situation. Anyway some lateral thinking or google to the rescue.

I too want to mod a new box with an old drive and could use some guidance.

I have a box that I modded to a large drive with xboxhdm & then loaded unleashx.
I still have all the original files & eeprom.bin as well as the xboxhdm cd i used.
The motherboard on this box has gone out.

I now have a like new & never opened box I want to put that drive in.
I have ftp copied the eeprom.bin from this box to my pc.

What I need help with is how to unlock the large modded drive, put the new eeprom on it, and relock it so I can install it in my new box.

Thanks for the help.

Unlock the large drive with the original xboxhdm CD (boot, select option 3, then type unlockhd -a)

Build a new xboxhdm CD with the new eeprom, then lock it (boot, select option 3, then type lockhd -a)

You might need to redo the softmod if the original softmod was kernel specific. In that case after you have unlocked the disk, follow the link in my signature - "build a new softmod disk with eeprom"

Krayzie 1.1 isn't kernel specific, so you should be OK.

You are missing a step. Each Xbox has a unique unlock code for the hard drive. The new Xbox you bought will expect to unlock a hard drive. If that operation fails, either from using a hard drive that is already unlocked, or another hard drive from a different xbox, the xbox will post error code 5. If you want to use your old drive you can. Simply run the softmod to the point where you can backup your eeprom image, then use HDDlock with that eeprom image on your old drive. From there, it should work great in your new xbox. If you are unsure of how to do any of this - poke around the site for tutorials - it has loads of them.

On the contrary, you are missing a step! You've just recommended an incomplete version of what I said back in post 5, on November 24th. The step you completely miss is removing the original lock from his old drive (note: REMOVE the lock, not UNLOCK) before relocking the drive with the eeprom from his new motherboard. That's why he needs two xboxhdm discs - one with the old motherboard eeprom to remove the lock, and one with the new motherboard eeprom to lock the disk to the new motherboard.
