So early this year i managed to softmod my boyfriend's xbox for him and after tons of reading and researching and by using the Splinter Cell exploit I guess its called, and Action Replay and rewiring a controller to get the gamesave from the computer to the xbox, I got it figured out. Well when it came time to put it onto the xbox he picked the UnleashX dashboard just because we really didn't know the difference. We haven't had a tv since then to play xbox but he is still unhappy with it because he says its ugly or not cool enough or something like that.
To the meat of the sandwich... What is the difference between EvoX and UnleashX? Are there any other dashboards available for the xbox? How would I go about obtaining and applying a different dashboard to the already modded box? Oh and I did try to look for it, but it still made no sense in the tutorials/guides section. I am in no way a whiz at this stuff so please throw me a bone here if you will? I'll luv you forever! Thanks |

What is the difference between EvoX and UnleashX? EvoX lacks a file manager, amongst other things. Are there any other dashboards available for the xbox? Quite a few. XBMC is your best bet. Google "xbmc nightly builds". How would I go about obtaining and applying a different dashboard to the already modded box? Start off by installing it into your apps folder, then run it from there and make sure it works. Backup your EEPROM to your PC (if you haven't already done so). Which softmod auto-installer did you use? |

I am not sure which auto-installer because I am not sure of the names of things and because I did it towards the beginning of this year so time has muddled the memory. It was the Splinter Cell exploit that contained EvoX and UnleashX.
Is there a way to just get new skins for UnleashX if we don't have an internet hookup for ftp? Thank you! |

Depends what you mean by "internet hookup". You don't need an internet connection to get FTP access, but you do need a network line of some sort hooked up.
However, it's quite possible to add files without using FTP at all. Burn 'em to a disc and UnleashX's file manager will let you copy them over. You could even use the memory card you installed the mod with - Xplorer360 will let your PC read/write to it. |

Ok correction we have no network of any sort. I guess he has decided that he wants to put XBMC on it. Now that it has been narrowed down...
If I have this correct I could just download XBMC onto my computer and then burn it to a blank disc and after that just put it into the xbox to allow the file manager to do...what? I am lost after that. We originally used his computer, which no longer works, to do all the research and gathering and downloading so I don't have the correct programs (Xplorer360) to work with. Go into file manager and copy the program to where? How do you copy it and to which drive? You have no idea how much I appreciate your help. Thank you again and again and again. Do you have a router for your Internet that the Xbox could connect to? If not, can you get or make a crossover cable?
If not, then burning to a CD or DVD would be the easiest for you. You would put XBMC into a folder on the E drive named Apps. So you would have - E:\Apps\XBMC The tricky part is making XBMC your default dash. I can tell you how to do it through FTP but have never done it with a file manager on the Xbox. Frosty's Rescue Disk may help you there. I believe you can use it to set up XBMC as the default dash. Everything is easier if you can connect the Xbox to the network or to the PC. |

To copy stuff using UnleashX, you go to the file manager and you'll see two windows. Use the left and right triggers to swap between 'em. "A" opens stuff, "B" goes up a directory, "Back" leaves the file manager.
If you press the white button over a file/folder, you'll get a context menu. The "copy" option there will copy whatever you highlighted over to the folder selected in the other window. Likewise, you can use the context menu to delete stuff, rename stuff, make new folders and so on. You can highlight multiple files/folders at the same time by pressing the X button over them. When you get it running, you'll find XBMC's file manager works nearly exactly the same, though you use Y to highlight multiple objects instead. |

Ok so is there anything else I need to download along with XBMC?
I have it downloaded and unzipped and I burned it to a CD-R first but the xbox wouldn't read it. Then I tried again with a DVD-R but again the xbox won't read it. I am soooooooo close and yet so far away. Only a little more of your time and I think I will finally get it. Is there something I am missing here though? |

Define "won't read it". If UnleashX is saying the drive is empty, then keep trying different brands/types of disc until you find one it accepts.

DVD-Rs seem to work best as a general rule. May not be true for your system.
It would probably be much easier to just use Xplorer360 to throw the files onto that memory card thing you used to get the exploited save game on the console. UnleashX will let you transfer stuff off it in much the same way you'd do it with a disc. |
