First, props to Frosty, the pics are really helpful.

Just thinking about doing something similar to my box, please correct me if I'm wrong, but the only difference between the current SATA connector inside the official hard drive controller is that the power connector does not have the 12V lines?

I'm not exactly a fan of a large hole in the side of my case, so I was thinking about pulling the 12V line out to near the harddrive connector. Maybe I'd take apart an official HDD and add in the 12V lines to the connector. (or if anyone knows where to get the MS adapter for the HDD as a spare part, that'd be cool).

Any issues with my way of thinking? Or better yet, has anyone done something similar?

Yes, the only difference between the 360 HDD SATA connector and a typical one is the absence of the 12v line.

If you added in the 12v line then you would be set, and you could use the 360 HDD SATA connector with any size HDD you like. happy.gif

The easiest way would be to use a SATA power/data extension cable, and simply cut the yellow wire and connect it to 12v.

Here's an example: (it's rather simple/lame example, but i'm bored at work and it seemed like fun to make)

You are correct in thinking that the white-jacketed wires are the data lines, but they are pins 2, 3, 5 and 6.

The bare wires are pins 1, 4 and 7, and they are the ground lines. (these NEED to be wired to a ground point or interference will mess with your SATA signal)

NOTE: Pins 1, 4 and 7 can be connected together and soldered to any ground point on the motherboard.

Here's the pinout for the SATA cable:

is it ok to think pin 1,4 and 7 on the board are grounds ?
Am i connecting pin for pin ?

thank you
nice mod.

"where is the edit button?"

anyway,
I went for it and all is fine, I was just testing so I only use a Toshiba 120GB from a PS3, but formatted and running on xbox.

I never could solder the dam 12v point.
Since im not using a dvd drive, I took the 12v from there.
I can also confirm that grounding status tray will NOT stop light from blinking.

thanks again bro.

Grounding the tray status line won't work, but connecting 3.3v to the tray status line does. wink.gif

I was mistaken earlier in this thread... but my below post will show you how to do it correctly. happy.gif

QUOTE(FrostyTheSnowman @ Dec 23 2009, 03:27 PM) *

Try shorting pin 4 to pin 6. (3.3v to pin 4)

AFAIK, the tray status line reports closed/open by the line being pulled high (3.3v) or low (0v/ground).

I'm not sure which, but i'm pretty sure now that when the line is high (3.3v) the system thinks the tray is closed.

There's no risk in trying AFAIK. happy.gif

EDIT: Confirmed working!

Here's the easy way to do it:

Going to make it so we can change drives on the fly from the drive hole. (almost done)

Also modding an official hdd casing to do the same thing. (starting)

this is too cool.
thanks again Frosty

edit:ps: everywhere you see "duck tape" is because it is not final.

Great little guide here, frosty! Love that new bit where you use an extension cable. I found one at deal extreme, is it what you're referring to? It's a bit long though (54cm)

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13067

The ebay one is shorter (15cm) but it looks similar to the pictorial guide you posted:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/22Pin-SATA-Extension-Ca...5#ht_829wt_1167

Here's another one, it's a two pack!

nice pretty nice

i was wondering since ever, if the DVD-ROM could be replaced using a HDD (xbr_3).
will the system recognize a HDD using the SATA (0 i guess) port of the dvd-drive?

the xbox 1 didnt.

All of the above cables will work just fine, and the length isn't an issue. (almost any length of SATA cable will work just fine) happy.gif

Not at the moment, but i'm sure a software hack will come out eventually that will allow you to do it. smile.gif

i'm confused about the XeXloader part, do you plug the hdd into your computer and put xexloader and w/e the other stuff was xbreboot on it? So a 2.5" hdd won't work with Xexloader?

Your question is not very clear. But what I understand, Yes you have to plug the HDD to you comp at least for first time to put the XeXloader. after that you can use USB drive to transfer data. And yes xbreboot or freeboot is absolutely necessary.

and one more thing for xexloader you need put the data in memory card or any other FTAX hard disc directly connected to sata hard disc connector. USB hdd not work for XeXloader. you can use both size hard disc.

ok, that partially helped ok - so i have to plug my hard drive directly into the computer via sata. then i load xexloader on to the hdd. Then i load on xbreboot or freeboot. Then i take it out plug it into my 360 and format it.
--System Settings

--2. Memory

--3. Select HDD (it will show as 'unformatted' most likely)

--4. Enter Serial Number----- do i enter the serial # that is on the drive??

--5. Drive is Formatted

Can you also clear up your last statement because can't understand what your saying.
Also once i have this all done i will be able to write my games to the hdd and play them without the disc in?
thanks alot!
