I'm sure that you people are all aware of the new Sandisk USB flash drives usable for game saves and marketplace downloads. If you don't know what I'm talking about, google it.

My question is, couldn't, say, a portable USB hard drive be formatted the exact same way as the flash drive is formatted, and then be used in place of said flash drive for way more storage at a much cheaper cost? Think about it, 500 gigs of storage for less than $90!

Would this be at all possible.

So can the USB device just be connected and formatted by the 360 or does it have to be specially formatted by a program?

Has to be done by the 360. In dash 9199, they've implemented a max size limit for usb drives. Hence, the 16GB limit.
