Calm down Canadians!

QUOTE
Update: Canada will in fact have voice support, according to Microsoft. So long as you speak English and not French.

The above was on Engadget via Joystiq via Shacknews.

It`s all MS fault for paying so damn attention to the movement and facial stuff

and not investing time and money for proper laguage and accent recognition for ALL supported

languages.

Is it that they will see if it will flop to invest more money for the rest countries?

I travel to the US frequently and I can tell you right now, with the exception of the Southern states where they are all rednecks, the English they speak is the same as what we speak in Canada.

Really? I was born/raised in the south, so I'm a redneck? That's news to me..

The south will rise again! /jk

On topic:

Like one poster said previously, if it were reversed and MS didn't support American English until a later date, many Americans would be upset. However, that's not the case. MS is a company, they follow the money. If Kinect really requires separate dialect support.. it would only make sense to target the largest markets first then move onto smaller markets (not necessarily saying Canada is a small market, but then again.. I have no clues where the numbers stand)

Hmm, what if we set our xbox to the US instead of whatever country we're actually from. Then we should be able to use the English voice control.

Have to do this with some games (Mostly from Ubisoft) to have English text and such instead of the crappy localised version. Playing Assassin's Creed two with Swedish text and menu's is a pain in the a-hole.

Either way this isn't something that worries me, wont get Kinect right away anyway so I don't mind waiting until next year.

oh boy, sure, they are after the money.
but that's exactly what they lost from me at least.
i have no problem that it doesn't support german at start.
and i bet it doesn't matter to most of the people what language it doesn't support.
there will be updates.
BUT it does matter that we are not getting the full product because we are not even able to choose in which language we want to use kinect.
that's absurd.
i live in germany but i am able to speak english, no matter if american or international or british or.......
the lack of voice rec in canada makes even less sense.
M$ is in fact crippling my xbox experience and they will feel it in their pockets.

Thats makes no effin sense. Is the voice control geo-locked? because otherwise a voice recognition system should recognize American and Canadian voices basically similar, though it may not recognize non-american terms like "Please" and "Thank you".

Classic.

Since Canada officially has two languages they can't say they support Canada without having french Canadian supported. There are other minor differences between english in Canada and the US. so it's not like they could implement it with zero tweaking. What if you were to say "Roof", the system would be totally confused though if they crossed British English with American English you might get a decent middle ground.

Problem, with the Canadian version is they have to figure out how to prevent it from activating the '"eh" button after every voice command. lol /jk

If they don't even let us use it with English here in Europe, they can forget I'll buy one. I can speak decent English, American enough for that software to recognise at least, so I hope they at least keep the support for American English for European buyers too.
Unless they really want us to get a PS3 instead, they just keep giving us more and more reasons to change and not one to stay, why MS, are you just ignorant or plain stupid? grr.gif

On behalf of non-asshole Canadians I apologize for this asshole.
Who uses the 'parents basement' reference anyway? The 90s are over grandpa. Also, no one needed a history lesson on english from you. If the 'author' of the news article was joking, then why come in here and talk down to the people who believed it! I believed it!. go fuck yourself and get off of my planet (earth)

thank you

On behalf of this Jackass I apoligize.

Perhaps this person is not living in their parents basement but instead just never graduated elementary school to learn that speaking English for the most part is exactly the same between Britain, America and Canada.

So just so you can all shut up about this topic now: http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/02/kinect-...til-2/#comments

Durrrrrrrrr........... Therefore "Canadian English" will be supported. French is a different language.

"Parents' basement" is a reference?

Anyway, the Canadian English thing must indeed be a joke. If specific accents need that much attention, and they've managed to support people in Texas, Louisiana, New York, Boston MA, Wisconsin, *and* England, I'm sure the Canadians will be fine.

oh good... when my boston acccent comes through it'll know what i'm talking aboot...

oops.

........... I speak perfect english, EXACTLY the same as any American.................

hahahaha.ROFL!!!

Thanks guys, reading all this has given me a good laugh. As someone who has travelled a bit, and lived around this little Island of ours my accent is a bit mixed now, a little scouse has crept in recently. (At least I assume so since they've all stopped commenting on my accent, except taxi drivers of course, but thats only to be expected. Maybe MS are using taxi drivers to code their recognition software??).

I think it likely that the reference to Canada refers to Quebecois, but wait, if that is the logic, what about the few thousand or so poor welsh people in our GB. MS hasn't done them the courtesy of delaying UK release to take account of their sensibilities. But then, they are Welsh and so probably won't notice anyway.

Ssshh back away S l o w l y..

BTW.. in Nottingham, if you are English and find a Welshman within the city walls after nightfall, you can legally kill him.. The bye-law still exists!! LOL
