For the same reason they stopped original Xbox support - They want it to be a legit, non-gray area of legality software choice now, despite it's roots. The real question is why didn't they change the name? Ditching their past and dissing the community that built them, and sticking it to them by calling it XBMC when they ceased development/updates on it is just plain wrong.
