i mean what is the actual resolution for regular ntsc television output that the xbox puts out. i want to know how good the resolution is without the hdtv pack. thanks.

No!

640x480 is not standard television resultion, it is VGA which is significantly better!

Standard NTSC output is 460x360 INTERLACED.

It's interesting that the broadcast is interlaced, this means that the actual signals are approx 460x180 or less (especially given that VHS is less and the Xbox conforms to VHS output, e.g. lowest common denominator).

This also goes to show why the DC's VGA adaptor did such a fantastic job at increasing it's output quality, since the DC was pushed into rendering at the 640x480 resolution.
