Maybe it's just a badly worded statement. AFAIK they're just DVD drives, there's no way for them to use a truly new kind of media disc with substantial physical differences.

From Kotaku:

QUOTE

The good Major himself tells Kotaku "Unfortunately beyond what was included in the post I don't have any additional details to share at this time."

The only information he would share? It's not Blu-ray, which would have been silly to guess anyway.

Another Microsoft representative added, "Microsoft is continually striving to improve our products and could not do so without the help of our Xbox community. This particular public beta is to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format."

That's what I find intresting, I wonder what's going to be on that disc. An old game perhaps? maybe different games for different testers?

I wonder if they would risk updating a drives firmware through a Dashboard update?

I'm wondering if the 360's software allows a totally new encryption and storage method for the data on the discs. That's one possibility I'm considering, though obviously I don't know how likely that is.

maybe they will just use another disc structure for their games?i guess you all know that every disc has about 1gb of unused space (video padding or something similar, that's why no installed game has over 6gb,although the iso is 7,3gb in size),so more space for developers to use in their games.

i don't think this is possible.why didn't they update all the 73450c and 83850c liteon drives to 93450c back in september 09?the 93450c was "unhackable" for quite some time (almost 3 months),and the MRA hack is not something everybody can pull off.
wouldn't it be easier for them to keep the same hardware and update their dvd drives via dashboard update?but since 05,we've only seen newer firmwares on hitachi's,sammys, benq's and liteons via factory manufacturing.the newer the drive the newer the firmware it had on it.

They are probably moving the update file on the disk since its getting close to its size limit.
Could also be a new put this disk in a xbox video since that hasnt changed for awhile.
And likly they will be adding ap25 to all games now.

I find this very interesting since whatever they do needs to be compatible with all old drives which are still just DVD drives. So what kind of major changes can they make while still keeping this compatible with old systems?

I am going to be interested to hear details as more is learned.
