I have alot of free time and im 23 year old computer nerd who loves computers so i figured web design would be a good thing to learn and help me make some extra cash. does anyone have any suggestions as to which programs i should use? any good videos or books to read?

drupal has some pretty cool stuff you can do. pretty active IRC channel and tons of modules to do what you want, or customize if they dont do what you want.

large community, always updating - worth looking at.

I would suggest you learn jquery, xml, and css. That's the core of web UI. If you want to concentrate on more of graphics then I'd suggest you learn how to use Photoshop and Illustrator.

Sitepoint has alot of useful info. jquery is used more common nowadays for setting up the functionality or usability of a site in terms of setting up widgets.
