1st off. I've searched A LOT for relevant threads and info. Couldn't really find an answer to these questions.

This Xenon refurb xbox 360 is NOT modded and the drive is making really strange winding/clicking noises and not reading any disks. Sounds like the track/motor is struggling. I'm guessing I just need to swap the PCB from this drive with a new/used working drive.

How do I tell if this is a MS25 or MS28? Does it matter or can I replace with either?

I was looking at these stores:
PC Direct
Aztec Computers
TekGems

Or I'll just buy from someone in the forums here. Or if someone is interesting in purchasing it let me know.

If there is something else I could check out as possible fixes please let me know. I don't think the pot tweak or lens cleaning would help any....

I think the samsung drive is like the lite-on and either drive can be flashed with either firmware, not positive though

This 360 is not modded or flashed in any way. I'll need to flash a replacement drive if I get one? I thought I could just swap a few internal components so the new drive would appear to be the same to the motherboard..... any tutorials or FAQs on this?

if the drive is not flashed and you do not want to flash then you should be able to buy a drive and swap the PCB again I believe the hardware is the same only difference is the firmware

Anyone here that can answer with a little more expertise? Does it matter if the replacement drive I get is M25 or M28? How do I tell which drive I have?

I'm probably just going to get This drive.

On top of the drive there should be a sticker with a bar-code, at the end of the first line it might say F/W=ms28, which obviously is a MS28 drive, better yet, a TS-H943 drive with a newer FW than the MS25 drive.

As far as I know the MS25 and MS28 drives are pretty much identical, at least the CFW is the same for both drives, and a MS25 drive will show up as a MS28 drive in JF after you flashed it with CFW.

Just an update. I bought a used MS28 from someone on here, got it today and successfully fixed the drive by just swapping the PCB controller board between the units. BTW, the broken/old optical drive was actually a MS25, but this still worked regardless.
