I've bought a used XBox, as a spare in case my current XBox ever goes down, and I'd like some information on it, please, as it's a Crystal v 1.6 XBox, which I've never used before. My questions are:

1. I've heard that some games and homebrew don't work properly on 1.6 systems, is this true? And are there any other incompatibilities I should know about? I have a PAL XBox (I'm in England), if that makes any difference.

2. This XBox already has a mod chip soldered in. I don't know what type of mod chip it is, but if I hold the XBox upside down, then I can read what's on the external part of it (which is glued to the bottom part of the XBox directly below the XBox's On/Off switch, on the jutting out part that runs in both horizontal directions under the joypad ports), and the text says

BANK (2/1) Flash Protect (Off/On) Chip Enable (Off/On)

on each of the three switches respectively. The plastic part of the switches are black, but there's a white switch behind the BANK switch, saying LED On/Off. If I set Chip Enable to Off, then the XBox only boots original discs, but if I set Chip Enable to On, then it boots backup discs too, so I assume the mod chip is fine. When set to Enable, I get the pink mod logo in the corner of the screen when the XBox boots up (in the green FMV when you first power on the XBox), but aside from what I've wrote here, I don't know what sort of mod chip or BIOS mod code the XBox has. How can I find out, please, and do I need to know, or does it not make a difference when adding a new hard drive?

Anyway, this XBox only has the stock 10GB had drive in it (I don't know why anyone would mod an XBox and not add a larger hard drive to enable them to run all games from the HD and also all emulator roms and stuff), so I'm going to put a larger HD in there whilst I can still find IDE HD drives. The largest I could find was 160GB, which is fine for what I want, but before I start, I want to know if there's anything I should beware of, does the fact that it's a 1.6 XBox make a difference, is the mod chip's BIOS OK, etc. Sorry for the newbie questions, but I've never even used a 1.6 before, let alone modded it (well, it's already modded, but I'm adding the hard drive myself) so I want to make sure I don't make an obvious mistake.

Thanks for any answers.

1. No.

2. Sounds like an Xecuter 2.6.

BIOSChecker, Evox dash or XBMC can help identify the current BIOS. It's definitely Evox M7, M8 or M8+ (they're the only ones that run on a 1.6 and have the pink logo), but you'll need one of the three programs to help identify the BIOS further.

You can tell if the BIOS is OK by running XBPartitioner 1.1. If it complains about no LBA48 support then you'll need to flash a new BIOS.

HeXEn will set up the new disk for you.

Sorry, forgot to say:

1. No.

That's great to hear. I'm *sure* I read about problems with games or homebrew on overscan or 60Hz or something, but I never took much notice since I didn't have a 1.6, and I'm no doubt confusing things in my memory.

Yes, that's the one (at least the switch part is the same, as in the picture http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/4/xecuter2.6ce/PC190070_b.JPG I don't know about the other part.)

Understood. Thanks again for the info.

Linux doesn't handle the 1.6 video chip as well and maybe some homebrew might have small overscan issues, but lots of homebrew allows for screen size adjustments so it doesn't matter. Not likely you'll ever see a problem.
