Hi, I currently have 2 xboxs here with me that both have open tray.

However when i tried to swap the lasers something strange started happening.
First off the new lasers didnt fix the open tray although you could hear the drive was spinning much better than before.

So i thought i would adjust the pots. However when i decreased the pots resistance the drive motor suddenly stopped working properly. The disk went to spin up but then struggled untill it stopped and the laser was still light up trying to read. Their was also alot of hissing when the motor eventually stopped.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what this might be? Ive ordered new drives in for both of them but i would really like to sort them out without having to replace the drive each time.

pot tweaking is a waste of time

you killed the laser by pot tweaking it

if both drives had open tray why in gods name did you try and swap lasers? pointless much?

the motors are unaffected by all of this - what you see is the classic symptom of when a laser is dead, the motor only spins for a second.

if the drive doesnt detect a disc, it does not spin the motor after the first pulse.

also a waste to buy a whole new drive when a new laser would have completely fixed the issues.

open tray = laser is dead.

replace laser!!

Sorry that i wasnt clearer when I said
"However when i tried to swap the lasers something strange started happening.

I should have just typed, I fitted a brand spanking new laser and it did not work so i adjusted the pots slightly as some new lasers need their pots adjusting.

And the drive motor was not giving a pulse it was trying to spin but slow came to a stop at which point the drive started hissing.

Can you be more specific on what XBOX revisions you have and what are the DVD Drive models they have in the box?

Sorry i wasnt spacific. Yes its a vad6038. Ive got them both working now as i was able to get hold of a couple of drives. One was a new drive which still showed open tray however after i adjusted the pot it started reading games fine.

I would still be interested in why in the other drives the motor starts slowly stopping the more you adjust the pot on the laser. Whats the corrolation between the two? Unless it was the motor that was causing the problem all along.

Honestly, I never liked the VAD6038 drives... whenever I had issues, I was replacing the full drive and move on.

i just went through my pile of drives i found 3 that worked, i bought new lasers and wanted to test them i swapped a new laser into the working drive it did not work

i put the old laser that originally worked back in and it didnt work, this happened on 2 different drives
the 3rd worked so i left it alone, bens are horrible drives i am just going to order some from my supplier

i spent 6 hrs with these drives swapping parts and flashing and out of all of em only 3 worked and now 2 out of the 3 are done

Like I have said, The BENQs are the worst drives on XBOX. The only solution is to replace them as a whole, not just the laser. Their mechanisms are failing all together usually.
