My previous 360 (pre-slim) RROD'd and black friday scored me a new slim, leaving me with all my old saved data on my old style hdd. I tried to save some money by skipping the $20 M$ transfer cable and bought a hardrive enclosure, thinking I could put the drive in the new case and plug that in with USB. One might assume M$ put the same hdd's in the two styles of 360 but internalized the new model? Not plug and play that I have found, the new slim doesnt recognize that the old hdd is a M$ special. Research brings me here, there are all kinds of tuts and vids but I havent been able to find one that was posted recently and they all seem to be slightly different using xplorer 360 or similar program.

Is there a new/better way to transfer data physically? Is there a way to "trick" the 360 into recognizing a drive with compatible data? Can the trasfer kit be imitated?

Any direction is helpful, thanks!

If I understand you are trying to use the hard drive in a USB, don't think that will work. If you bought the 4gb slim then just remove the fat hdd from its case and plug it directly into the console, detailed tutorial on this can be found searching YouTube. If you are trying to transfer to a new hdd then your easiest route is to just get the MS transfer cable. You can probably get one cheap on eBay.

Well, The same happened to me with the Xbox, I got new one and wanted to move my data, so i just got and enclosure, and just put my 60Gb in the slim itself. I need to transfer licenses, but all my stuff was read by the Xbox. So i don't get, do you already have a HD in the slim? Or did you get the 4GB? Because i got the 4GB. If its the 4GB, just getting a slimHD enclosure should work fine. I got this one

If your talking about transferring your old data to a 250GB hd, just use the transfer kit,
It $10

Or if you really don't want to, When my friend got a 250GB, we just formatted a 16GB Flash-drive, and copied back and forth, till we were done. If you have a fast flash-drive should take about 30Minutes for about 30Gbs worth of stuff.

I have the 250gb, yes $10 is not expensive but I already have an enclosure for the hdd to connect with USB, which I paid $4. Also i do not want to swap the drives , i would like to combine the content onto the 250 slim drive or leave the data on the old hdd and just access it when it is plugged in occasionally.

I have another hdd that had nothing on it, I reformatted it using the slim,

I extracted the content folder from my old drive using xplorer360, so I believe I now have a copy of the content folder saved on my computer.

I plugged the reformatted drive into my computer to try to load the copied content folder onto it, also using xplorer 360. For some reason it doesnt just let me drag the files onto the reformatted drive. Is there some reason for this?

It seems like this should be a simple process. The drive is compatible if you put it directly into the console in place of the "stock" hdd. So the content has to be readable. After formatting the drive to be USB-console-compatible the data should be able to go back onto the drive and no worries yea?

what am I missing?

thoughts welcome

I think your better off what i did, I used a second Xbox, and a 16GB formatted as a MU(flash drive), just copied back n forth, it's quicker than all the trouble your giving yourself right now. Because i was trying to do the exact same thing, using explorer. It was giving me trouble, so i just did the other method.(Quick n easy)
