Depending on what dashboard version is on it, you can JTAG or RGH it.

Dont update the dashboard at all. If its like a 7xxx version and under you should be able to JTAG and it needs to be made before June 18 2009 or somewhere around that date.

If your dash is a 8xxx version or higher, then you can only RGH it.

JTAG requires a soldering iron, transistors and resistors, wire, solder, and a programmer to read and write to your nand.

RGH requires all the same as a JTAG but you dont need transistors and resistors and thats replaced with needing a $20-25 RGH modchip.

You can get a nandx programmer for $40, and quick solder boards can cut out the need for transistors and resistors and make the job easier for someone new to such things.

Make sure you read your nand 2-3 times and make sure they are matching reads.
Make sure you keep your CPU key and make sure you dont lose it and your original nand readings.

You don't need a jtag utility, you can go directly to serial provided you still have a serial port.

That is true, if by jtag utility you mean NAND Programmer, and by serial you mean parallel.

Also, reading/writing the NAND is only about 1/3 of the story...

just sayin'
