Hi, I'm hoping somebody can help me. I've been using XBMC 2.0.0 (10-26-2006 CVS T3CH build) for years now (came with Slayer's EvoX Auto-Installer v2.7). Never had any problems. Not bothered about fancy scripts, all I want is for it to play video files without crashing.

But now release groups have moved over from XviD.avi to the x264.mp4 format as standard and XBMC v2 doesn't seem to support this file format. I was looking to update XBMC but I've read the comments about later releases for XBMC containing more bugs as time has gone on.

Is it possible just to update the codec for XBMC so it plays these files without having to update XBMC to the latest version?

Thanks.

I'm lazy, so I just recode x264 .mp4 files to Xvid .avi files. Done! biggrin.gif

Lazy? That takes some effort to do. I've done the odd episode in the past when no release group puts out an xvid version but now 20+ groups have scrapped xvid altogether. It would take too long to re-enk every episode.

Is there a way round this? Does XBMC4XBOX support x264.mp4 files?

XBMC4XBOX does support both the x264 codec and mp4 containers, you'll just get bad shuttering when you get into HD resolutions. I really only experience crashing when using scripts/plugins like Navi-X, so that should not be too much of an issue for you.

The best way to play HD content is through UPnP using a program that supports transcoding. TVersity and PlayOn are two that I'd recommend. They both allow you to stream local content for free and virtually all files will play. Moreover, they can also be purchased to get near Navi-X like functionality. PlayOn really stands out in this aspect by supporting both major video sites and user made plugins.

You can also install more ram from a dead xbox. It's really worth it if you have the opportunity.

OK, I installed XBMC4XBOX-3.0.1-STABLE and it works! Yippee! The files play so I am happy with that. Thanks for the HD tip, I'll look out for that if and when I need it.

The only thing now is the skin, I really liked the old MC360 skin that came with XBMC 2.0. I thought I could just transfer that skin folder into the new one but it says skin is not compatible, only skins from v 2.1.0 onwards.

I see there is a link on the XBMC4XBOX website but it just goes to some text files. http://www.xbmc4xbox.org/skins/mc360

Does anybody have the zip/rar for this?

Thanks.

A skin is predominantly text files, so why were you expecting anything different?

Use Tortoise SVN to retrieve it, and run the included batch file to build the skin.

If you have a fast PC you can also use PS3 Media Centre to stream high def x264 to the xbox - it works well if your PC can keep up.
