Original Post:
Nothing says noob like adolescent 13 years olds racing their post counts up in useless forums... to achive what? 666? 1000?
God damn.. some mod or admin better respond to this complaint.. goddamnit.
Wait.. I am an admin.. and no one listens to my complaints..
nevermind.
------------------------------------
Alot (most?) POST COUNT threads merged here.
New Post: This will be the dumping ground for any new posts from people who seem to lazy to search on the subject as to why their POST counts stopped going up when they only post in the offtopic and sales forums.
Post Counts in Offtopic and Sales forums.. have been turned off.
Post Counts will only go up if you are active in Technical forums. If you read this thread.. you get some idea why this was necessary.
Anyone who argues that post count is important.. or means something other than a person has been around enough to post that many posts is a moron.
Anyone starting new "WTF? why does my post count not go up?" should expect to be ridiculed publicly in the forum.
Xeero Made some great points..
| QUOTE | Well, the whole rank thing is horseshit. You can put in, what, 100 posts in 4 days in Comedy, and you're a X-S Senior Member. I've actually seen new members say, "Thank you, it's nice to have a senior member pointing me in the right direction".
|
| QUOTE | | Because if Joe Asshat thread craps...or sells a lot...or buys a lot...or supports a lot of sales...or bumps his sale a lot...or thread craps some more...THAT is an accurate assessment of his Xbox experience, right? |
| QUOTE | | I like the premise that you really can't complain about it and still maintain your integrity. Go on, try it. |
| QUOTE | I've said it before and I'll say it again: you really can't complain about your post count without sacrificing your integrity. If you do complain about it, then you're posting for the wrong reasons.
|
UPDATE (2/18/04): In case there was any doubt.. any threads started about POST COUNTS/POST RACES etc will be merged in here. Those who are blatantly abusive will get warnings. The moderators also have BAN privilges now.

I have thought about this topic for a long time.....but finally seeing the recent events get worse and worse I decided to start the disscusion. The number of people on this forum who race to increase their postcount rises rapidly. More and more stupid and useless topics like "Whooo-hooo this is my ***'s post! yeah!" "Please help me raise my post count to 666!" "Thanks for everybody who helped me reach my ****'s post!" began to swarm the forum. I propose to disable the postcount feature in this forums. Postcount is not the main reason we come to this forum, right? We come here to talk about Xbox, hear each other's opinions, share views....but not what it has become these days. The new people at this forum probably think, the bigger your post count, the more people will respect you. Which is not true by all means. If you are helpful, people will start respecting you even not by looking at your postcount, but by how you post and help. Plus disabling the post counts will show if people are true to this forum or not. Those who will start crying "WTF? Why did you rmove my postcounts??? I had so many...." will just prove that they cared for their post counts more than anything else, like it was a sacred thing for them and they posted just to raise the number. Those people who truly like this forum for what it is won't even care if they have the postcount or not. Because you earn people's respect not by the number of your postcounts.....
What do you guys think?

| QUOTE (vidgms4me @ Sep 6 2003, 09:25 PM) | Personaly, I think that there is no way this will happen. Post count does encourage people to continue posting. Plus, if someone is getting mixed info and trying to judge who is right, it is much more reliablle to take info from someone with 2,000 posts, as opposed to someone with two.
Disabling post count would cause this place to be deserted. Everyone already knows who the spammers are, and disabling post count would not discourage them one bit.
Well, that's my 2 cents. |
Not true. There's been plenty of users, come and gone, that have postcount in the thousands that know less about the XBox than some retarded monkey who skimmed a few of the tutorials. On the other hand, I've seen users with less than a handful of posts who give wonderful advice and info because they don't spend their time jabbering- they spend it on actually using their XBox and reading the tutorials. Relying on the postcount at all is a bad idea, and it's really only there because it would seem *wrong* not to have it.... but I'm all for it to go away. It'd discorage more of the dumbass types from posting at all; postcount doesn't encourage true contributors from posting. You think Dmauro gives a damn about his? How about Ubergeek? The only people who give a damn about it are those who want to spend more time socially politicking than actually helping.
[EDIT] Guess I'm still rambling. Anyway, what would be wrong with the forums losing those who purely just want to post for the hell of it? If that's half the members, what would be wrong with the forums becoming less of a social stomping grounds and more like pure content? Isn't that what the forum was created for in the first place?[/EDIT]

However, if you eliminated post counts, there would be no distinction at all. I am well aware that post count does not affect quality advice. Many newbies do give very good advice.
However, many newbies are known to give incorrect advice. Yes, there are people with high post counts that give bad advice.
Oh well, I have no idea where I am going with my arguements. Just please keep the post counts.

Perhaps I phrased my wording a bit harshly; nevertheless, I didn't mean to make it seem like I was trying to devolve this into a flame war.

| QUOTE (Timan @ Sep 7 2003, 02:46 AM) | | I say keep them on, because when I go shopping in the buy&sell forums, I dont want to be buying from someone with 3 posts, rather feel safer with some active user. also just ignore em if you dont like em :|! |
by this definition you might have accidently bought something from anthrax(heaven forbid) and gotton screwed.
I say keep the post count, but higher the standards of what is acceptable behavior and what is banning material. In other words, ban more of the morons and keep the post counts.

"Bad idea. Because then the newbies will get mixed up with the regulars, and there will be chaos. Keep the post count, I say!"

If the post count is taken away, you still have the Member Number and Joined date to determine if they are a noob or not.

I believe you have to add the date and time also. QUOTE=vidgms4me,Sep 6 2003, 09:25 PM

edit: for the postcount some people should just be banned or have there post count dropped to zero, when they spam. That guy Anthrax spammed the forums to death, he has about ten million posts and joined just a few weeks ago days ago.
