Just a quick question...

I have a busted mobo and a locked 80gb drive.

short of swapping the eeprom with a new mobo is there anything else that can be done to make the drive usable again... I dont care too much about the data on it, but it would be nice, if possible, to recover it

Im thinking the answer is a flat NO, but I figured I would double check.

also, any tips on swapping eeprom would be nice, too. I only seem to see 1 tut, and its a bit sparse on details.

It is actually possible to stick a big magnet on the side to wipe out the part that has the lock on it, (I think), but eeprom switching is really easy, the chip is so small you can just heat each one up for for a little bit and pull it off. If that doesnt work, you could lay solder accross one side and heat that entire side.

Hope that makes sense, I'm sleepy.

If you'd made a HDD key backup
(using evox backup option etc.)
things would be easier.

Well if the mobo wasnt busted he could get the backup, but then he wouldnt be in this situation anyway.

Are you sure about that?.. bcuz I know a big magnet will erase the hard drive.. or screw it up..

Ok just throwing my 2 cents in. But a big magnet to unlock a drive could possibly be the dumbest suggestion ever posted in these forums. Will this same big magnet eliminate my credit card bills if I use it to wipe all the cards in my wallet?
