hey I have a problem like many people in this forum. my video doesnt work in my xbox but my audio works fine. no red lights. I've tried new arctic silver on the GPU and CPU with no luck. I've bent the X-Clamps to make the heatsync stay on the GPU tighter, I've gotten the intercooler with no help.
BUT... I did do the towel mod for 10 minutes and video returns back for like 3 hours. I'm not exactly sure what that does but it brings it back. is there any way I can make the effects of the towel mod permanent that way I don't have to repeat the process? or do I have to send it in?
that brings me to another question... since the microsoft seal is broken and the warranty is gone..... will they still repair it for normal price?

EDIT: also the 4 things in the audio/video tutorial told me to do dont work either.

bending the X-Clamps would actually make the situation WORSE
the problem isn't that they're not tight is that they're TOO TIGHT and warp the mobo.
you want to remove them completely.
if the towel trick worked then this is the solution.
follow the removal guides in the general hardware chat board and you'll likely bring your console back to life.

I was looking at the MK I X-Clamp replacement. think that would be my best bet? the MK III doesn't have the parts listed and just says TBC.

LOL look at RBJtech's Tutorial and Discussion Thread on the website you gave me. his has MK I and MK III like I said. I was hoping I was going in the right direction and you just proved my point by giving me the link XD

so you're right
I'm just used to hearing them referred to as RBJtech and lawdawg
I've never done either of them myself but I've heard countless success stories.

Would you like to share your custom method?

my dad did basically what RBJTech's idea is except he did a couple things different
he used a drill press and drilled 3mm holes through the screws that were already on the CPU and the GPU. he left them on because he said that leaving them on would leave the proper height for the heatsinks against the chips. then he took these 2mm thick rubber washers he told me he got from General Ionics because he worked there as a plumber. he put those on some 3mm screws and stuck them up through the new holes through the bottom of the motherboard. then dropped in spring washers on the top and lock nuts and thats it.
he also removed the GPU grating for room for the screws.
