Ok... I was modding an Xbox with a Chameleon for a friend.
I was giving him the Chameleon.
I was installing it for free.
Anyways, the actual installation went pretty well. We installed it and it worked fine. I put the DVD-ROM and HDD in and turned it back on. FRAG. So I took the DVD and HDD out and pushed on the modchip a little bit (I was using Quick Solder) and it booted up fine when I had it held down. So I applied some more solder and made sure it was connected. I put the Xbox back together again, only this time the modchip didn't boot. For some reason the Chameleon wasn't grounding the d0 properly because I had the bottom point soldered perfectly. After a little fidgeting, I got it to work. I put it back together, turned it on, FRAG. So, frustrated, I take it apart again and make PERFECTLY sure the LPC points were right. I turned it on and it worked... Then I turned it on a second time... I heard a crackle noise... and I immediatly, by instinct, took the power cord from the Xbox. I smelled something burning...
I tried to boot the Xbox again and, again, I got a FRAG and a little smell. I took the mobo out and looked around it, and found something under the mobo... a little copper-colored metal piece that looks like it broke off from one of those things that have the copper coil around it on the power supply (memory slips me on what they're called). I put the mobo back in and booted it, and FRAG (keep in mind the d0 was not grounded at the time so it wasn't the modchip), but this time there was no smell. It seems the damage was done and nothing more would burn....
I put the mobo in my Xbox and it didn't work, so obviously it was the mobo (I wanted to confirm).
So... really... is there anything I can do about it? I looked on the mobo to see if there was anything that looked bad, but nothing did. I smelled around the board to see if I could spot where it broken, but also, nothing.
Also, how should I repair this? How can I obtain another motherboard?
btw, one thing that pissed me off was that he wanted to borrow my Xbox until I could fix his. I didn't say yes, though, and he got kinda mad. Does anyone else think this is rediculous? After all, I was doing this all for free... He knew that there could have been something screwed up. If it was really my fault (as in I screwed something up while soldering or something) I would have considered letting him borrow my Xbox, but to be angry because I wouldn't let him borrow it when he knew something could've gone wrong? Why should I mod his Xbox for free under the obligation that if I fuck it up I'll have to fix it and buy the parts? He knew that something could go wrong, and I was just doing a friendly gesture. He wasn't REALLY mad though, he kept his cool and was internally mad, but he was partly bugged because it was half-his, half-his-brothers, and he actually hadn't gotten the permission from his brother to do it.
Thanks for your help... I need it

did you inform your friend of the possibility that the mobo could be nuked, and that if that happened you wouldn't take responsibility? Otherwise, I think you do owe him something...

|darc| you shouldnt have done the mod, take responability, its frag'ed because of a failed mod, if you had not been in it then it could not be your fault. let him borrow your xbox until the other is fix/replaced.

This is the deadly issue when it comes to modding a mates box. I've got a few mates wanting xboxes modded like this. I'm willing to do it, but there is always the possibility of it fucking up.
I think your mate was just pissed off because it wasnt technically his, but he still shouldn't take it out on you for frying his mobo. I doubt a new mobo is that much anyway.
I would offer to fix it and mod it properly given he pays for the new parts.

I would never mod any Xbox other than my own.
If you screwed his Xbox up, you should at least let him borrow yours until you can get his repaired. My advise is not to mod/solder/blow up anything that you can't afford to take responsibility for.

I know, next time I do something like this I'll be writing up a contract that 'I'll do my best possible to mod the xbox but if something goes wrong I'm not responsible'

I didn't put my mobo in his, I put his mobo in mine. But if the mobo worked, it would have booted to the error screen, but this one FRAG'd.

And why shouldn't I ? To tell the truth, I received some Chameleons from Xodus for reviewing purposes, and my friend is part of my staff, which is why I was modding it in the first place.
btw, I do plan on paying half of whatever it costs to get the Xbox back working, which is about $40 because llamma has mobos for $80. All I have right now is $40 to my name, and my friend has about $600, so we can get it fixed.

Well I look at it this way... you did not owe him the modchip. You did not owe him the free install. If he let you do it he had to have known the risks. No one is that ignorant. He knew it, he took the risk. There are no guarantees on free stuff. It was an honest mistake and it wasn't your fault at all. It was just as much his as it was yours because he didn't notice that piece of metal at all. To make you pay for it is bullshit. You don't have to give him your xbox and you shouldn't feel obligated to but as a friend maybe you should consider it just because you're friends. Free doesn't mean "if in the process of royally hooking you up I will take responsibility for anything that happens no matter what it is". It doesn't. If you're not willing to replace your own shit that someone was doing for you for free and you let them do it.... then you don't deserve a new one.

That's exactly how I feel... thanks, you've made me feel better.
Anyways, I got off the phone with him a few minutes ago and we're probably gonna do a Wal-Mart swap. Buy a new one, put the busted mobo in that one, and put the Wal-Mart new mobo in this one. Hopefully it won't be a v1.3 Xbox. We'll bring it back and ask for cash, and if they don't want to give us cash, exchange it for another Xbox, which we'll try to take back to another Wal-Mart for cash (since the exchanged one won't be opened) and if we still can't get cash we'll sell it off to someone who's looking for a brand new Xbox.
