Guys I am real curious how does this work???
I want to get my Xbox to the point where I can FTP into the whole time
so I made an Avaulanch CD..one where I set my IP of my xbox to 192.168.1.9 with a sbunet of 255.255.0.0 which should put it on my existing network
anyways .. I start it up and the dashboard is there.. I go into settings and the IP is set
but when I try to FTP nothing happens
when I try to ping my Xbox nothing happens?
what am I doing wrong?
Ive read the faqs and stuff but they don't seem to help me out at all
bleh

Is it possible you using the wrong type of cable?
What's your network setup (i.e. direct, or to a hub, or to a router...) and what type of cable (i.e. cross-over or standard) are you using?

The subnet mask of your computer and your xbox have to match to be able to see each other.
Furthermore, the subnet in the IP address must match as well.
Example:
23.92.231.100 can only see 23.92.32.100 if the subnet mask for both is 255.255.0.0 or 255.0.0.0 since the subnets in either scenario would match (23.92 = 23.92 or 23 = 23)
If the subnet mask for both was 255.255.255.0 then they would be in different subnets (23.92.231 != 23.92.32) and wont be able to see each other.
