Hi, can someone tell me where I can buy such a clear DVD-rom cover (or how do you call it)?
BTW, great mods all!

Thanks

Hey, my other xbox (its in this thread somewhere earlier) has a 3rd party clear case on it, and it had that dvd drive in it. Then I bought a second (the one you quoted in your reply) and it had a sammy in it. So i swapped out my thompson drive with the clear dvd drive spindle... since i wanted to actually be able to read some sort of disc in my modded box lol. The clear 3rd party cases are only like 20 bucks or something like that... but im unsure if you can actually buy just the spindle. Also the spindle is only gonna fit a thompson drive.... unless you feel like modifying it to fit other drives.

And for those that are gonna bash the 3rd party cases, it looks hot as hell... and as long as you dont abuse your xbox, you'll have no problems with it.

By the way, I just put a red LED fan in it, and I have 100 bi-color red/blue LED lights coming in the mail soon that'll all be going in to the machine... woot. And if you didn't read the thread, it has DupliColor Mirage red/blue color-shifting kameleon paint sprayed on it all purty.

This is a real good example of how extreme the color change is depending on how you are looking at it... just before reassembly.

I hope you all like it... cuz its about to get LIT UP!! biggrin.gif

yeah, i want to try that color-changing paint one day.

on top of your xbox?
is this placed where the jewel used to be?

how is it attached?
paulharris2005
yer its on top of my xbox where the jewel used to be.
it attached with the screws that came with it, just drilled the holes and screwed it on from the inside, you can see the screws in the corner.
it does make a difference aswell, my harddrive used to b warm to the touch after about an hour of games (played from the hd) but now even after several hours it feels the same temp as when its off.

Case mod:
I recently finished this xbox. I had planned doing this two years ago, but never did anything about it till recently.
Actually, it was a test to see if I can actually do it so I can do another one with a 15" LCD flat panel.
As you can see, all turned out well.

It is a v1.4 motherboard.
I didn't want to cut the case so I decided to put all the connections to the front
The ethernet port is working so you can easily connect it to another xbox and system link or connect to the internet or FTP files
The AV port is intact so you can still connect it to a TV when you want to see it on a bigger screen
It has two heatsink fans and one 80mm fan for airflow for the mobo. Two heatsink fans for airflow for the LCD screen.
Two switches on the bottom: one for AV signal to the LCD and the other is for leds in the controller ports and fans
Switch on the top: switch for power to the LCD

These two pics taken with game case and controller to show perspective on how big the case is.

dam thats a belta box!
perfectly portable and nicely protected.
i take it it uses a large HDD rather than a dvd for games?
ohmy.gif you can even lock it if you dont want people using it when your not there lol

nice job biggrin.gif
Dozer
That is the shit, very good work. Would be nice to tidy up those wires going to the screen to finish it off for the perfect mod though wink.gif.

Man that's awesome. I might just have to give that ago. Portable Xbox > any handheld console, that's for sure.
simsbox
shame theres no room for the controller in there
mod_me
i like it alot. it needs something in that empty space in the middle(built in arcade controller maybe if possible). do you have any pics of the internals??
Spartan83301
That is a sick case mod! Man that is sweet! Well here is my latest addition to this forum, I wont compare to what's above but it's a try lol. It's a custom clear case. I painted the outsides of the X to match the lights. I have a Halo 2 jewel on top (not pictured) that right now i am waiting to light up with a cold cathode. I also have matching controlers and (pictured) DvD dongle and remote.
Let me know what you think! biggrin.gif

Yeah, I have to carry the accessories in a separate bag.

The next case I'm going to make is with a 15" lcd flat panel monitor. I already have the parts: case, lcd, mobo, etc that I just have to have the time to put them all together.
This will definitly have space for the dvd drive and storage room for the cords and controllers.

Yeah, i agree. It kinda looks too empty under the 80mm fan.
I was thinking of a window, but the HD is sitting right under there. There's little to no room for leds as the HD and tray are adding support for the board smile.gif

I'll try to take pics of the insides when i get a chance

I think I got a lot of you beat...

This took me 4 hours..

I thought it would have taken me a wmonth to do, but it took 4 straight hours of work.
There is a fan on the cpu and bpu. there are 2 exaust fans. Power button and led conntedted to power and power led on P/E board off xbox. And the reset button is set to the eject. Also the HDD activity Led is also connected.

I have a xenium ice solderless with an LCD from toka mods. 128Mb ram coming soon. 200Gb Wd HDD. Hitachi and samsung dvd drives (samsung put in after pics.)
Also adding 2 other HDD in 2 weeks and another xbox PSU because I cant seem to get the ATX psu to work.
I am also doing this now in my buissness because I did it so perfectly. powered up and worked the first time.

Anyone wants it done Im in south florida. I will have to charge a bit because My hands are now sliced to complete shite and it was a lot ALOT of cutting and splicing

wow, so it took you four hours to sloppily throw some xbox parts in a pre-modded pc case? you must surely be the greatest modder known to man.

oh wait, you also resoldered 4 wires (2 for power, 2 for eject) .... egads!! do your modding powers know no limits?

sorry to burst your bubble mate, but if you're shooting for greatness you've got quite a ways to go yet.
Spartan83301
oooooooooooh awesome! another smartass comment from ubernewb. Do you really have nothing better to do than sit on these sites and put people down and cause problems? Come on man we can all see that this was a pc case fit for an xbox and most of us with modding experience should know what he has done. it's easy to see that in the pictures, but you don't have to put him on blast because you can't do these types of things and need to make yourself feel all warm and fuzy inside. Please, Please, Please get a life. Or maybe you should post elsewhere.

yeah.. i can't pull off a simple case swap.. i waste all my time on stupid mods like cutting plastic, free forming abs and plexiglass, bondo, and paint. you don't know anything about my modding abilities so don't assume you do rolleyes.gif

honestly kid, this xbox->pc case has been done a thousand times over and it's funny when someone does a simple swap and thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. so i poke a little fun at it.. sue me. if he takes a little critisism as horribly as you do, i'll appologize. personally i think i was just making a point, even if it was a little blunt.

and as for what he has done, lemme see...

1. attached some mobo standoffs in proper locations to securely mount board, OR.. cut out bottom of xbox and epoxied it into pc case, thus giving him the mounts.

2. wired pc case's power and eject buttons to stock p/e board, as well as tying in power and hdd activity leds.

3. extended controller ports to back panel? not sure, cuz can't tell from those pics.

4. slapped dvd-rom and hdd in case's provided locations

5. installed modchip and lcd, which just happened to fit right into one of the case's bays

6. mounted two led fans in case's provided locations

so far that looks to be about it... anything i'm missing, oh experienced one? ...

i know i musta got your panties in a bunch in that last thread were we got into that little tiff, but i suggest you just let it go.. it's not worth the headache trying to hold your little e-grudge

I agree with the guys about this, it gets my back up a little too, theres no need to post that. If he really thinks he has beat alot of us in his mods he really should be thinking again.

ubernewb is a well known member of this forum and is known for his quality and skills of work. Ive been on here long enough myself to see the quaity of work some people produce.

I myself have spent many hours making real custom cases and creating many custom / console / pc / other projects.

Ive also done plenty of custom mades to sell and done customer orders on a real number of ocassions, and alot of people who have seen any of my work will know the quality of it also.

--------------------

The things that get me about this are he thinks he has most of us 'beat'? a solderless modchip?? a plug and play LCD??

a DVD drive mounted with no custom made faceplate??

Now i don't know about most of you guys, but theres no way i'd settle for anything like this, personally i would make everything right, i would have also got a nice socket A heatsink and fan and used this, or done a watercooled project due to the size of that case.

Anyway i'm not looking to argue, just making fair comments.
rockrerun
I hate to add to this, and I don't mean to offend anybody, but how much talent does it take to put the guts of your xbox in a PC case? Honestly, all you really have to do is drill a few extra holes, and screw everything in. If you built the case yourself, then it might be something. and besides, who would want to lug that thing around?
mrogers
This is my first Xbox mod -- I just got it earlier this week, my primary use for it will be as a media center for the hundreds of gigs of movies and TV shows I have stored on my server. As such, I didn't want a ton of LEDs all over the place, that would be distracting while watching a show. I'm a big fan of clean and elegant. I know it's nothing original, but I worked on it most of the day yesterday and wanted to show it here.

In addition to what you can see, I also did the hardwire DVD dongle with a relay (that's probably my favorite mod) and an 80GB hard drive. I have an X-bit 1.5 modchip and am running XBMC as my default dash. I'm going to do a hardwired Logitech Cordless Precision with relay as soon as the dang thing gets here next week. I also discovered emulators this morning -- playing MarioKart64 without pulling out the old Nintendo rocks!

And I did paint the case myself, that's not an aftermarket case. Krylon Fusion paint is fantastic for plastic.

Later this weekend I'm going to get the back of the jewel sandblasted to give it a frosted look, which will disperse the light. I'm also considering HDD and remote control activity LEDs, but I'm not sure if I want that much blinking going on.

No I didn't, and actually I did that on purpose. I like the look that it's sort of floating. Also, I'm using the dark plastic down there to hide my IR receivers and stuff like that, so you can't really see them when looking at the box unless you shine a light right on it.

that is an amazing for a first paint job, im not sure about the dongle though.

Slacker Master, very nice! I love it, nice and clean. Your LEDs behind the controller ports don't seem as insanely bright as most people's (which is why I have avoided doing them, I don't want to be blinded by a ton of lights while watching movies); what LEDs/resistors did you use? Anything special? If I can get mine to be that subtle, I might do it.
ubernewb
point the leds backwards..
Slacker Master
I used 5 volt, 30mA, 300mcd with no resistor (cuz they're 5 volt, there's no need for one). I think I'm going to add one more LED of the same kind to each port, to make it a little brighter, but like you, I don't want blinding LED's in there.

And thanks a lot for the nice comments smile.gif . I'm pretty proud of myself for it being my first paint job. As for the controller dongle, I odn't have the clearish one so I can't put an LED in there, but I wanted it to match my controller though instead of just being like any one else's controller dongle, so I decided to pop it off and paint it to match, I like it

i like how your paint job came out
real smooth

my friend (who has no modding skill what so ever) painted his puck silver and it looks like ass cause he touched it when it was still wet so its all dirty looking

On my xbox, I have color-shifting Duplicolor Mirage red/blue paint, and then i have 54 bi-color red/blue LED's mounted throughout. Two in each controller port, two in the eject button ring, and the rest light up the cut out x and the side vents... so 40 in the lid, and 14 in the front panel/controller ports. I then have a red standby LED... and also 3 blue for hdd, dvd, and LAN activity lights. I used a drill press to mill all these holes at 1.5mm and then filled them with hotglue... forming a perfect activity light biggrin.gif

I also drilled out the numbers above the controller port(i forget what size tho) and did the hot glue thing. Those come on (with red or blue) when a controller is plugged in to the corresponding port.

It's almost done.... just a few more things yet to do. I'll keep ya posted!

Would you mind taking apart your box and showing me where all the LED's are located? At first i thought you had used cathodes but your sig says else. Thanks
Slacker Master
That's amazing ohmy.gif . I'm the same way, I don't usually like the huge X windows, but I definitely am liking that one. 52 bi-color LED's, that's insane! Sure looks nice when it's al lit up though. Very very nice, I like it a lot, very clean and professional looking.

So they are mounted backwards? I installed blue LED's in my CP, and it was too damn bright. I'm changing over to UV, and just wanted the CP to glow, not blinding. Do you have a pic how you mounted them?
Slacker Master
No, notice that they're at a very low mcd of 300. The higher that number, the brighter, and most LED's used for Xbox mods are in the thousands, so 300mcd isn't all that bright. I just turned them to get the most light out of them, facing them into the hole I drilled into the back of the controller ports (facing towards the front of the Xbox), then hot gluing them in place.

2 controller ports and 2 usb ports behind the little err whats-the-name.
but that part isnt looking that great, but that doesnt bother me since im not gonna really use them.
