Anyone remember the box the guy built that was a wooden cube with plexi on the top? Was custom built and shaped from scratch with a plexi underglow with blue light.


Anyways if anyone knows what im talking about can you post a link? Ive sifted through these forums and cant find it for the life of me.

Check this out my box. Please let me know what you think. This is my first mod. What could I do better next time.

well first off you could have not sanded the bezel as the texture of the xbox doesnt look right with the smoothness of the bezel, also those leds sticking out of the controller numbers you could have atleast put them in in the centre (unless its just the picture) as i think leds sticking out look tacky anyway.
Maybe you should try clear leds because they would have looked better and probably would have been a brighter green aswell.
But very nice paintjob but maybe you should have painted the black around the p/e buttons and the jewel looks perfect.

Well, as it tends to go with personal projects, It seems like my xbox will never be done. There is always another mod, a little tweak, a part still in the mail, a new idea that you just can't live without. That said, I won't be posting too many pics of my box, but I will give you a glimpse of it in it's current state. And I'll be showing my second mod, my brother's Halo themed box.

This is the costum EvoX skin I made for my brother. And I know there are better ones out there, but I love this TV. Image looks great, running on composite video, atm.

Here is my brother's box. The paint is Duplicolor Mirage green/silver, though it should be called green/black/purple.

Same angle, but with the flash on. The flash ruins the color flipping effect, but shows the coverage better. This box has 3 base coats, 9 layers of color, and three clear coats. Why so many you might ask? You'll see.

Same box, but when I shot it straight down with a flash it was amazingly purple. Note: This is not the purple/green Mirage paint, but obviously has alot of purple flake in it anyway.

The placement of the cathode switch. If you can't tell, its inside the last fin on the left side of the box. The controller slide just BARELY fits in the groove, and can still be toggled with a finger. Well, a small finger. It is attatched to the inside of the case with liquide nails... lots of it. It isn't going ANYWHERE.

Looks a little like a Special Edition Halo box, doesn't it? Well, it isn't... same box as before... The secret. I used a clear acrylic replacement case, ya know, the ones that everyone says suck. Well, when lit from underneath, the light spreads all over the top of the box(much more than can be shown in this pic. I'll try and get a totally dark shot later tonight) Its really very beautiful. And the many layers of paint were necessary to get the box looking opaque from the outside.

Closeup of the jewel. MadModder Halo clear acrylic jewel. I highly recommend these, Top quality, easy to install. This case was hand dremmeled and you can't see any flaws through the jewel edges. Plus you can see how sharp the etching is. A+ to MadModder

Here you can see how the paint is not as thick in the crevice around the fins, and between the fins themselves. When unlit, you can't tell the difference, but when the cathode is on, these crevices shine brightly, creating a cool outline.

I'll take a moment to address right here that I initially purchased this box from Llamma.com. Since then I have chipped it, done a few internal mods, and am awaiting cathodes to finish the lighting, as well as a few other planned tweaks. It is still very much my own work, and very customized.

And finally, a shot of the SmartXX chip doing its two color thing. When it is solid blue, it complements the rest of the lighting scheme very well, and the solid red actually looks ok too, giving it an evit heart sort of look.

Hey Dracc nice color! smooth paint job. I was thinking of spraying mine the same color. so you started with a clear case? how did you prep it? light sand? i don't think the paint would like sticking to those clear cases much. I'm so over the clear cases they are getting really average

Okay total n00b to the mod scene, but here is what I've done to mine so far


You cant really see it in the pic, but what was the anodized green on the centerpeice of the logitech controller is now chrome.

Also I am thinking of doing what black on it in either a dark bronze color, or possibly silver. dont know yet.

You don't, paint right over it! Then use a silver paint marker and go over it.

dont sand it all the way off because if you do the paint texture wont match the rest of the xbox unless you sanded the hole xbox smooth before painting.

You could always go through the tediousness of putting masking tape over the word.

Ok, sanded the letters off and the texture came out perfect, this is a shot before the clear coat so the paint looks "fuzzy".

Oh yeah that maroon-ish color, well I ran out of paint before I could finish it off, and so I decided on a color change.

Thanks. Actually All I did for prep was to drill the jewel hole, then clean the whole case very well. The primer I was using wasn't anything too special either. Just the mirage black primer, which they claim makes the color flipping affect more dramatic. Not sure if that is tru or not, but I have rarely seen a primer look so good. When I put the first coat on, I wanted to leave it like that. It covered so evenly and had such a smooth matte look to it. Anyway, I did three primer coats before moving on to the color, and I have not had any problems with the paint running or pooling during the spray, and it hasn't had any peeling thus far, and doesn't seem like it will. One thing, if you do paint your clear, and have ANY sort of light inside, it WILL show through. But as you can see, it can have a very dramatic effect.

Okay another dumb question. Is there anywhere that makes a clear power/eject button?

would you mind re-phrasing that into a sentence that makes sence?

Personally, I don't see what is gramatically wrong with that. He is looking for a manufacturer of clear plastic replacement buttons for his power and eject buttons.

i personally havent seen any for sale, but many of my friends have clear cases and usually the buttons come with it are clear

Ok a got some plexiglass to do a window over the dvd drive. I wanna cut the drive lid so you can see the disc spin. That little silver disc on the lid, what is the best way to hold it in place or should I just let it sit there loose?

I know skins are uncool and painting is the way to go (I've seen some really awesome paint jobs here) but I'm a complete modding n00b, so I'm just gonna keep my skin on for now, and maybe some day I'll paint it.

I just reinserted the clear jewel so here are some pix. Simple chonology - took off the jewel with goo gone (awesome method btw), took off the paint w/ brasso (too noxious), cut out and sanded down the hole w/ a dremel (a lot easier than some made it out to be), glued it on w/ superglue (does kind of turn the edges of your jewel white...). I could have done a better job, but for someone who has never used a dremel before, I think it came out rather nice.

















Next steps are to put in the cold cathode and figure out if I want it to be switchable from outside of the xbox. I got one w/ a switch but I heard accidentally turning it off while the box is on could eff up your hd.

you should keep going with that brasso to take those scratches out and make it a little less blury.

will it take the scratches out? I guess I could try before I affix the cc.

I'm not big on skins, but that one looks pretty good.

Its got 6 white leds under the temp display fan, and 6 underglow leds behind the front panel. 80mm rear fan, window modded sammy drive with hand etched basketball window above lit by a pink CC with yellow lens tape to give a orange glow, hard drive turned over to cool pcb and chips with top fan, duox2 modchip soldered in.

Its not much but it gets the job done

I said its nothing special. I dont have the crazy handy work skills like most people here, and i would like to try and learn but i dont want to break my xbox either (and knowing me i will).

and by the way....I heard that the external fan you got there actualy hurts the xbox temperatures

mhmm, more electricity to use the fan means higher temps. try putting a different heatsink on next time, no1 will call your xbox ugly then

theres no other spot to put that thick of a fan that blows the wrong way to be in the rear. besides, its cooling the hard drive which is flipped over. it also has an 80mm fan in the rear as well.

So you mean i wasted money, dam im returning it



Its not that the processer is overheating its the hard drive. I guess im gonna have to cut some holes in the hd holder, i just hope i dont screw it up.

Every time I see a skin, especially one on the front, I just about cry. Same with an xbox with external fans.

If you don't want to get flamed there are 2 things that you must never do to your Xbox.

1. Put a skin on it
2. Put an external fan on... internal ones are fine...
