Hey all,
I just got done with my second xbox install of openxbox chip. Everything went as planned and bios was flashed accordingly. The problem is I get a contact MS customer support and there is a code 16 in the upper left screen. I know that this code means that there is a dashboard error, only problem is I haven't touched the dashboard. I have also tried switching hard drives, cables and have had no luck. anyone have some ideas on this one? Also, when I boot with evox cd and check my hard drive it says 0 for all partitions on the drive.
Thanks in advance.

You can boot with the EvoX Boot CD.
You checked the xbox with 2 original xbox drives?
Checked all cable and connections...
Tested boot with known good hard drives and cables...
Can you see anything on the HD in an FTP session?

you flashed the openxbox with the yboxdash or evoxdash bios..
if you pop a game in .. it boot.. then you flashed with yboxdash or evoxdash .. just boot up using evox CD Disk ..and ftp into the HD and install evox dash .. or rename xboxdash..

I have evox 2.4 bios installed and I have tried a hard drive with both the original xbox dash and the evox dash and still no luck. I have also completely removed the chip and it still has the same error,(using hd with ms dash). Any more ideas?

Here's the clue as to whats wrong.. You flashed the chip, it's working fine. You can boot off a CD, and it works fine. But when you try to boot from the Hard Drive, you get an error.
That's because there's nothing on your Harddrive. You can't just "swap" a new harddrive with the origional. You need to zero it, and then format it, and then copy back over the original files and dashboard.
Please follow the various tutorials on how to do this. If you already did, and you still have the 0 bytes on your Hard Drive partitions, then you need to reformat them again and/or possible zero the WHOLE drive.
Also, a replacement HD will NOT work with the stock xbox bios unless you have "locked" the drive. Again, please check the tutorials and FAQs about this and how to do it.

Actually the part about the hardrive is unclear.
He does not say anything about installing a new Hard Drive.
If he did install a new HD without preping it first that would be the problem for sure.
Thats why I asked if he was using original xbox hard drives to test.
guido06 just states that he tried
"switching hard drives, cables..."
The part about booting to an EvoX CD and seeing the partition values at 0
indicates a bigger problem if the original drive was wiped out somehow during the install process.
Verifing the problem with FlashFXP is just for good measure.
If the original xbox HD is toast, truely contains no data,
he can try and recover with flash FXP.
There are other methods as well.

Let me clarify. I have tried 2 different xbox hard drives. One from another modded machine running the same chip and bios, but with the evox dash. The other drive is the original from the system with the MS dash. Both drives do the same thing, but work in the other modded box fine so it is not the hard drives I'm guessing. Possibly a power supply issue? I can hear the drive spin up however.

I'm having the same problem.
error 16 only on HD boot. This after moving the defualt.xbe the ini file from D to the computer, re-naming to xboxdash.xbe and moving it and the ini and the skin folders and the bios folder back to c. Just as the tutorial stated. I even had an experienced mod person who had dome the same procedure successfully help me but I still can only boot from cd-r ???
What am i missing.???

On my last try before bed I got it working. yehaa!
The problem was the bios I was using and the renamed xbe file.
Bios is evo.2.5.bios.evox-somethingorother-can't remember.
I had renamed the default.xbe to xboxdash.xbe as mentioned in the tutorials. After going through some of the other threads I came upon a quote that if you are using the evox bios then the default.xbe needs to be renamed to evoxdash.xbe. That worked
It pays to scan through the forum threads.

Thanks Idad
Yep the Evox bios with the tag "evox" boots to evoxdash.xbe
The EvoX bios with the tag "ybox" boots to the yboxdash.xbe
So on and so forth.
You can use the FanCbox utility to modify the default Evox2.5 bios
to boot to any named xbe you wish.
If you wanted to you could mod a bios to boot to "crackers.xbe"

Well, it still doesn't explain why I get this error still when the chip is completely removed. Also, I am using evox 2.4 and it works just fine on my other box and the dash is named just the same as the original ms dash. Any other ideas?

I have the same problem like you guys have described here. I have matrix chip installed with 2.5 yboxdash bios installed.
Then a week later I tried to change harddrive and now it doesnt work.
I can't boot of the old harddrive either. The matrix chip is checked again for alignment and is blinking green as it shoukd.
The evo-x cdrw doesnt boot, it works for sure earlier on the old drive.
No I have the xbox splash screen and then error code 16.
What should I do?

The drive from the other modded machine has been unlocked hasn't it?

If I set the matrix chip to mode2 or mode4 then the xbox boots three times and stays on without any picture.
When I set it to mode1 it boots up with the original xbox splash screen and then error code 16.
I have 256k.Evx2.5.colormod.err.noani.ybox.bin BIOS installed on the chip and evo-x cd inserted but nothing happens.
Why does it boot three times??

Now I got the bios working with the matrix chip with the colormod splash screen. but the cdrw wont boot. It just spins up and then do nothing.
What can be wrong now?
This feels like gamble your way to hell

Okay, I have tried to ftp to the box and I can't even do that. It says connection timed out. Any other ideas on why I am getting the error 16 code. As I said before I have backed the chip all the way out and it still gives me this code with nothing even soldered to the board.

You will never get the xbox into an FTP session without EvoX.
You will never get EvoX to boot without a working Modchip/Xbox.
No chip installed.
Original drive in xbox.
Original xbox must have original m$ xboxdash.xbe to boot with original bios
Xbox boots like this:
Splash screen: Bios loaded correctly
MS logo: Kernal loaded correctly
Boot to DVD (default.xbe)
Boot to Hard Drive (xboxdash.xbe) (unless using a special bios)
The 3 strikes, boot up/shutdown,
is caused by the xbox failing to load the bios.
