Due to the large number of people asking the very basic question - "How do I backup games to my hard drive?" - Here it is.
Its so very simple that almost feel stupid making a guide for it, but I guess people like to know whats going on before they start.
1) Get the latest version of dvd2xbox (Click
HERE to find out where to get it, HINT: its xbox/apps/filemanager) - Do NOT PM me or E-Mail me asking for software.
2) Install dvd2xbox on your xbox (This is covered in other guides)
3) Start app:

4) Insert Game (I am using Mechassault for this guide):

5) Press
A
6) Select Location to Save game (you can specify other locations in the .xml file) - Press
A
7) Notice that the app reads the game name from the .xbe and names the folder appropriately. Press Start to begin copying.

8) The game is then copied to the hard drive.

9) Once finished, the app then patches all .xbe's and ejects the game
10) Nothing else to do, so there you go, backup your game in less then 10 steps
Notes: let me know if there is anything that I missed or what not. If there is a demand, I may add a guide for using dvd2xbox for a dvd movie, which would quickly turn this into a dvd2xbox manual....

DVD2XBOX is a great application but-
Do you hear a low, sharp noise when you are copying a game to your HD? Its like your ears are ringing or something.

Umm...no, and I doubt it is a sound generated by the software. More than likely it's emitted from your drive.
Also, thread added to pinned list.

It might be your TV - I get that a lot.
Anyway, great tut heinrich. You use the xdk or video capture card for the screenshots?

I used the XDK, and I think I might as well make more of a 'manual' for dvd2xbox (as if it even needs one) We'll see how bored I get this weekend
And shanafan, dont believe I've a noise like that. Maybe you should get your TV, or your ears checked out

Great tutorial! The sad thing is that if there is anyone that can't figure out how to use this program they're probably not going to have the foresight to do a search to find this.

I love the new version 0.45, even EASIER than the last version if that is possible.

Thanks for the tutorial. I guess I wouldve found out how easy it was if I wouldve just installed it, lol.

Ok, I have a small gripe. This thing seems to totally install things, and HIDE them. I went about looking for the file to link in my games menu, and couldnt find the directory anywhere. Well, I popped the disc back it, browsed it, and found my file. (every linked file seems to be default.xbe) Anyhow, I added the line to my Evox.ini file, to find a dead link, and a working link in my games submenu (dead link being red). I removed my modified file and replaced it with the old one, and the link to my game is in there, even though I didnt add it. My only question is, how will I remove it (if I ever decide to) if I cant find it.

It doesn't hide anything. In fact, it TELLS you the destination of the game or video before it even backs it up.
Furthermore, the dead link was the one you added; you obviously did it wrong. The one that showed up is EvoX's AutoAddItem - it automatically sees the game folder and adds it to the menu. When you remove the game, the menu item is no longer displayed.
I have no idea how you can consider this a gripe...

dvd2xbox just rips the movie from the dvd, it does not encode it.

Yeah i have a question. Right now i am currently running dvd2xbox 3.6 and i realized i am really far behind in the updates. So i downloaded the newest version 5. When i try opening the app it doesnt load. I am running evox 3929. I also updated my evox today and before when i ran evox 1.8 it did the same thing. And i am using a matrix modchip with the evox M7 bios. I dont know if any of those peices of info help but im just wondering why i cant get dvd2xbox to run.
P.S. i also tried thr 4.9 version and it did the same.

Delete the whole dvd2xbox directory on your xbox (so ALL files are removed) then put the new version on. If the config file is corrupt or wrong I've found it can cause it to hang. If you are trying to keep your old config, don't, since it's changed a bit. Just edit the new one.

Nov 4 2003, 02:43 AM
of course I am a Noob and just learning but you were like me once too... Anyway do you have to have the mod chip to make the copies of the games you own on your hd? I have just an xbox and am going to upgrade the hd and want to just rip my games to that, so is it needed?
Joshua Wood
Nov 4 2003, 08:56 PM
Yes you need a modchip (ideally) before you can change the hdd or copy and run games from the HDD. You can do a softmod via exploits, or even flash the onboard TSOP, but I don't have much knowledge of this, and you will probably end up with a lot more problems. I suggest you do some searching and reading of these forums and the tutorials on xbox-scene. You will find a wealth of info on all your basic questions, and then you can decide what method and or modchip is right for you.

quick question:
If i do this procedure and store the game on my xbox hard drive (which i've tested with my halo). Is it theoretically possible to FTP into the box, copy all the contents onto your PC Hard drive and then burn the contents to DVD so they are backed up on DVD or is there a simpler process. ?
and would i need craxation to create an image once i store all the contents on PC HD?
chefelf
Nov 6 2003, 03:46 PM
Yes, you'd need to FTP to your Xbox and transfer everything to your PC. Then you use Craxtion to create the image. Then burn it on the appropriate DVD (I recommend RecordMax Now 4.5).
There's no simpler process than that that I know of, other than just FTPing directly from your D drive with the original disc (and skipping the step of using dvd2xbox to back it up).

Thanks I figured that much... One quick question... I tried viewing contents of the disc in FTP Program (WS FTP) and I was only able to see two directories with few files in them and the files were totalling less then 200 megs and the game (HALO) i know for sure is over 2.5GBs ... Is there a certain method program that is needed to view all of its contents ?

You cannot see hidden files using ws ftp. Switch to FlashFXP on another FTP client that will let you view hidden files!

dvdx will only play the movie off the dvd, so you will have to use xbmp. Press the Y button to add the .vob's to a playlist to play through the movie. No, there are no menus.

I have evox 3935, and the evox m7 bios. I installed dvd2xbox v0.5.2 on my xbox.
When I put my game into the dvd tray and wait for it to finish reading, then press A, it doesn't do anything. I press the eject disc button and the xbox reboots then ejects the disc.
What's wrong?

The same thing that happens if the power went out when playing a game? Power outages don't usually hurt PC/game consoles, its the following power surge. What you are doing on the xbox at the time makes little difference.
And I see that most host is dead, so I'll fix that tonight or tommorrow

I had the same problem. I tried it again and the whole thing copied but then the screen froze in dvd2xbox. I restarted my xbox and, thankfully, the game loaded and I haven't had problems. I'd suggest trying to copy it again for better results.

Hey,
I'm having the same problem with my dvd drive. It's a Thomson as well, and it keeps telling me 11mb video when I put in some of my games.
I've managed to backup 5 of the 9 games I own, but my newest games(KOTR, LOTR:TT, Crimson Skies) are among the 4 that didn't copy.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I already did the pot adjustment mod on the drive so it would read rewritable media. Is there another way to copy these to my hdd?
Thanks in advance for any help

Okay, I figured it all out.
Basically, I found out that if I put the game in when Evox loads, and it recognizes it as a game, I can then start dvd2xbox and it will then copy it as a game and not an 11mb movie file.
Up to this point I was relying on dvd2xbox to recognize it, but it wasn't able to do it. Anyway, I got it to work now

Hi everyone,
I am new to all this, I just modded my Xbox yesterday, now my goal is to transfer my original games to the hard drive. Reading the postings here you guys mention the use of the dvd2xbox program to transfer to the HD, but it seems to me you all have Evolution X. Does this program (dvd2xbox) also work with Avalaunch?
If it does, do I need to use it differently?
Please let me know.
Thanks!!!
