I am looking to purchase the pioneer dvd-rw drive, my local store has them both;
the A04 model and the 104 model

Are they physically different I know one of them (the ao4) is the oem model since its 20$ cheaper, but i mean, is it worth paying the extra 20$ for the 104??

Also, has anyone had any problems with the latest firmware 1.33 I think it is?

Is it a good idea to upgrade?

wait a minute man....The A04 is the retail version and the 104 is the OEM ..that is the bare drive...thats the main difference...the A04 is the best!! if you want all the software and everything go with the A04....

There is no difference at all. Just the box and software.

There could be some warnatee differences between the retail and OEM versions. That would be worth the $20 (I don't know if there are any differences though). Also the retail proablly comes with software (but you can find any programs needed on the internet to download), this also could be worth the $20 to you.

Manufacturer warranties are the same. The differences are that the a04 is branded "Pioneer" on the front, comes in a shiny box, and comes with shitty lite-version software. The way I see it, I'm going to be downloading whatever software I use with it, and I'm gonna trash the box anyway. If I need the warranty, I still have it. I'll take the OEM version anyday.

At the time I bought my A04, it was well worth the extra bucks... great software, including SONIC MyDVD Video Suitew, Vertias RecordNow DX / DLA, StoargeGuard, and PowerDVD. Plus it shipped with 1 Pioneer DVDR and 1 DVDRW.

Bargain for the extra bucks in my book.

yes im with you ...thats why i order the retail version...

ESBUY.com has the Pioneer 104 OEM burner for $258. If you are savvy enough to burn DVDs then you are probably savvy enough to 'find' better software than is packaged with the retail version.

i got my 104 from esbuy and they still gave me sonic mydvd, powerdvd, recordnow dx, a dvd-rw, and a dvd-r, with free shipping. kick ass drive. whether its the a04 or the 104, you cant go wrong.

I think ESBUY is probably the most reputable place to buy this drive online. I have not heard of anyone having any problems with them. They are even selling the A05 now which can burn DVD-R at 4x

A05 already... jeez.. my A04 is only 6 months old. Oh well. Maybe the Wife will buy me one.
