I found a guy at my last duty station who mods xbox's so he hooked my up with evox and a hard drive i brought him. what he didn't tell me was what chip he put in it. from what it looked like he didn't use a chip at all he just soldered 2 wires in and that was it. he also put a switch in so i could go back to the original dash. I just want to find out exactly what he did so i can start doing this crap on my own. thanks

if you can just flash the bios wtf is the point in getting a mod chip and what did he solder those 2 wires in for?

2 wires are needed to enable writing to TSOP (the chip which holds the bios). Some TSOPS were 1MB and in newer xboxes there are 256kb TSOPs and you cannot store more than 1 bios on it (bios file image is usually 256kb). Anyway; if you have older mobo you dont really need to have a modchip, cause you can do, so called: TSOP split. Modchips are needed for newer mobos, or for more advanced users (1MB modchip can hold 4 bioses, and you can easilly switch beetwen them etc.).

A downside is you'll never be able to disable chip for Live etc ...
