windows xp 64 bit is supposed to be in the making. I think they already have a tes version and the full version is due out by the end of this year or early next.
I'm thinking of getting the amd 64 3200+ in the laptop I am getting for christmas.

there isnt really any need for a 64 bit processor right now now because there isnt anything that could take advatage of the extra power. 64 bit processors will eventually be standard, but until then getting one now will only prepare you for hats coming.

Dont use windows then! use unix or linux!
however, with windows you can look forward to awesome new 64 bit games such as UT2004 and stuff. i dunno bout the US but the processor has been out here for nearly a month.
WORD FOR THE WISER: DONT but the 940 pin FX-51 as it requires v expensive licensed RAM from AMD... go for the 939 athlon 64 (NOT 740) as you can use your fav brand of ram from them at no sacrifice to performance, its otherwise identical to the FX-51
HOWEVER the AMD 64 Bit processors offer a modest increase in performance in 32- bit mode too! al though i wouldnt call 17% increase over the worlds current leading processor

also there is a major bug in the nforce3, that i have yet to hear been fixed, its something with the northbridge chip that causes a 33% loss in performance when doing certain intensive operations, im sure its gunan be fixed soon, but for now be aware

ermm, dude theres no northbridge in the athlon 64 mobo
*edit* its an integrated processor northbridge by the way which is directly linked to the Memory using hypertransport and opposingly to the I/O controller, thus enabling 9.6GB/s of data as opposed to a mobo northbridge bottleneck of 6.4Gb/s in athlon xp and p4

i think youre thinking northwood which is the pentium 4 chip, but the northbridge is a controller chip on the mobo
analasys reports here that there is an issue with the norbeidge on the nforce 3 chipset
| QUOTE |
| The extremely low AGP performance of the NForce3 can be clearly attributed to problems with the HyperTransport channel interface to the Northbridge. That is proven by the benchmark results and the performance differences of up to 33.2 percent. Details about this can be found in the benchmark section of this article. |

what you are saying is that the northbridge chip on all motherboard for AMD 64 chips are done away with, that is wrong, just the job of ram control has been sent directly to the cpu instead of the northbridge, it is still there but does not do as much as it did before
i.stole.this.name
Nov 10 2003, 06:18 PM
search the AMD website for something to do with a comparison of chip structures (that is 64vsXP) youll see what i mean, the northbridge has been entirely replaced off the 64 platform and divided amongst the sections of the processor and I/O controller
DermicSavage
Nov 10 2003, 11:15 PM

IN FACT, it states it does use it
lookit Integrated Northbridge:

Just thought I would share this with you guys: This weekend I am getting my new AMD processor. It is a 2800XP, It is going to be a huge jump for me seen as right now I am running an AMD equivalent to a p3 450! The mobo I am getting cool to because it comes with SATA support which is great for me cuz I can't really afford another SCSII (? I mean scuzzy, dont know if what I used was right) I am also getting a gig of RAM to boot so I will be happy for awhile. Now I just need to save up for an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro with 256 mgb of RAM!

By then, I had the upper hand and I walked out.
I remember when I bought my first stick of DDR 400 PC3200 Ram,

u got fucked over big time on the video there bud, geforce FX 5200 is the next weakest card on the market(next to the Radeon 9000)
if u want to be a gamer and take advantage of it, you need at least a Radeon 9600, and of course 9800 XT for the best, nvidia has been goin the way of the shithole recently, as radeons have shown to have better preformance than nvidia in the majority of tests
EDIT EDIT: hey frozen, how much did u pay for that? i want more fuel to feed my laughing

wayyy too many of my freinds have ruined their comps doin it, and all for an extra few 100 mhz!?! i would only do this unless u got the money to buy a new one when it craps out in a year cause youre pushing it past what it can do(this goes for intel too)
