I've got the same problem, one Xvid movie only goes to about 11 min, I have another one that when I fast forward it skips up like 15min, and there is another video that does the same and also won't let me rewind it just fast forwards when I try to rewind. I tried XBMC and I don't have the problems but I can only skip forward with using these bars and can't go to an exact time I might want.

Get VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod if audio is vbr from doom9. Open the avis in question and set video and audio to "direct stream copy" then resave to another file. Won't take too long and its fixed that problem for me in the past. Usually happens if you download an unarchived avi file (which is more prone to errors).
good luck
