IGR!
There still lots of people out there still using an older modchip, thus not benefitting from the X2 IGR.
The only reason they keep using Evox, is because it has IGR. I agree, this dash looks great but without IGR I don't see any reason of using it. |
That's why you can't replace Evox that easily. I do understand that more than a handful of people owns an xbox modded with older chip. And if they want IGR, their only option is Evox(well, maybe PBL with X2). If that's your case, then, this dash is not for you, as in-dash IGR is an Evox thing and expect it to stay that way for fairly quite a long time.

In my n00b(ier) days, I had an old version of EvoX that didn't support IGR, and didn't know my chip did. I got along fine

, Im telling you - this dashboard is worth not having IGR.
In fact, the only reason I discovered I had IGR was because of a game named Halo, when on The Library in legendary, I got really angry and pressed every button on my controller before slamming it on the coffee table...
My xbox rebooted! I tohught wtf? and spent weeks trying to discover which button combination did this wonderful trick...
anyho', moral of the story: you don't really need IGR...

Oh, one more smaller suggestion. It would be nice if you can scroll backwards on the menu too (top to bottom). I've got quite a few games on my hdd and it would be nice to go backwards from A to Z instead of going down the whole list.

Get or create a skin that tells the menu to rotate. This way, when you reach the top, pressing further will jump to the last item, or vice versa. You may take a look at the bluebox skin and see how to achieve this effect.

How about an update/patch feature to update the dashboard from your xbox? (like avalaunch)
Or how about having integrated support for X-link? Like have a BO-Xlink tab (kinda like the xblive tab in the orginal ms dash)
Is it possible to have a very basic web browser (similar to the dreamcast web browser?)
Eliminate the need for needing to manually configure the xml file , make all settings configurable in-dash in realtime (with password protection of course)
Headset communicator support! Talk to other people using unleash-x over the internet to setup an xlink game to play!
....or above everything avoid creating new features until you smoothed out and perfected the existing ones...
This dash is coming along great! Keep up the awesome work! Just don't burn yourself out! Take a nap here and there at least!

About this IGR thing,
I agree that it shouldn't be the main purpose of the dash to have it, but should it be the function of the bios? Maybe it should, but there are still lots of people out there (including me) who have an older chip and are not able to use an IGR bios. This is an advantage the Evox dash now has, and an advantage UnleashX could get!
Also, the main purpose of a dashboard should be launching games/apps. A FTP server comes in handy, but webservers/email clients.. c'mon people! You can email on your PC, and if you absolutely want to do it on your tv: Go ahead and install Linux!
Again:
I'm not a coder.
I don't have a clue how hard it is to code a IGR into the dash.
But I'm sure it's worth it.

you guys know how buggy the evox IGR is?? and they havent even taken time to try to clean it up. some games like ETM wont even show picture if you have it enabled, that sux about nonflashable modchips tho

IMHO IGR should be left to the bios. To do it in the dash will take a clever bit of codeing. I am not sure how Evox do it, but I don't think it is done by a TSR app. They must put a wrapper around the game when it launches so they can still have a bit of there own code running when the game is running. (Then again I might be completely wrong

)
At the end of the day *any* xbox can run an X2 bios via TSOP if you want. Yes I know you can't then use live. If you want live, upgrade your chip so you can have an X2 & M$ bios at the same time. For the cost of a game, get an x2.3 and be done with it. I don't think it is worth development time when there are other alternatives out there.
Just my 2 euros worth.

I think thats already done on the new version...
I still stick by my pholosaphy (I dont know how to spell it, ok?) that IGR is hardly vital...
A web-browser would be very nice, but not for a dashboard. I don't know about you lot, but I dont want one all conqouring, almighty program that squishes the need for all others (wouldnt that take the fun away from downloading from xbins!?)...I want a dashboard.
The only comment on this page I think you should really be done is adding xml-configuuration to the settings menu.

XBoxGeek has the right idea, but for a less permanent, easier, and safer alternative... why not just use the Phoneix Bios Loader:
1. Use XBTool to edit your favorite X2 BFM bios (presumibly a version with IGR)
You want to make sure that whatever your current modchip boots to is not in the list of dashes to boot. Write down whatever you set the first dash to.
2. Write down the name of your currently booting dash. Rename the dash you want to boot to the name you wrote down in step 1.
3. Rename the Phoneix Bios Loader xbe to the name you wrote down in step 2.
Or, those of you with older modchips COULD use your Christmas/birthday/piggy-bank money to get yourselves NEW MODCHIPS
It is my firm believe that IGR should not reside in the Dashboard, but in the bios itself. Team Xecuter has done a lot of hard work to give us IGR and while it may not be 100% perfect it still beats getting up off the couch 95% of the time.
If you don't want IGR you can always disable it with a specially named file. In fact, with some basic scripting features you could do this automatically for games that don't work with IGR? (Not sure if you need a reboot or not to disable/enable IGR with a file?)
I should mention that I haven't gotten around to trying unleashx, but so far I like what I've seen and heard.
In closing... Don't drive @unleashx crazy with requests for features that nobody needs (like in-dash IGR). There are better (in-bios) solutions available. Besides, the dash shouldn't even have IGR to begin with.

Ok, here's a new idea:
if coding a IGR into the dash is to difficult, why not sort of team up with Phoenix?
Imaging this: The dash loads, on the background phoenix loads the newest bios (which supports IGR), everybody happy. Users with older chips get automatically the newest bios loaded, users with newer modchips don't use the function at all.

Damn.. this is one awesome dash... It has replaced my EvoX already..
One wishlist item I can think of right now: make the music play really random. When I start up the dash, it always plays the same song first and subsequent songs are in the same random order as always. Perhaps use the system time as seed for the random number generator?
TT
I think a lot of the suggestions people are making here would be going against the basic principle of UnleashX. This dash is intended to be lean, fast, and simple (which it has accomplished beautifully). Integrating a web broswer, pop/smtp, IGR, etc are things that (IMO) should be left as separate apps or BIOS features.
Or...

(I don't know how easy/efficient this would be to code) If people REALLY want all of these extra features, perhaps UnleashX could have some sort of 'plug-in' capability, allowing other programs to run as a thread in the dash, instead of another separate app. These 'plug-in' programs could have access to, and make use of, some of the dash's built-in functions, such as the file management, networking, ftp server, etc. This could allow other coders to write all those wonderful programs, and integrate them seemlessly into the dash, without bloating the dash itself.

My only wish for this program (as has everything I could want ATM) would be for the background music in the dash to play my MP3 files rather than me having to convert and load up my already large MP3 collection in my e:/music folder so the Dash can play them.

I agree, and that was one of my first requests. However, I now realize why it wasn't done in the original release. UnleashX relies on using a lot of the MS dash to perform it's functions. I'm guessing UnleashX is using the MS dashboard's music player for the background music. Now, I'm sure it would be very easy to change the location where it looks for music, but the MS dash doesn't support mp3 playback. Therefore, an mp3 codec would have to be integrated, and possibly a whole new music player.
edit: spelling
Another 'wish':
A way to create separate batch functions in Config.xml, not just using the <Batch="True"> tag for a list item. For example, for Autolaunch features, I would like to create a custom batch function that will use the AskUser dialog box so that I can decide if I want to use the Autolaunch program or not.
[EDIT]Example of how I would like it to work:
| CODE |
<DVD AutoLaunch="Yes">AutoLaunchDVD</DVD>
...
<Batch Arg1="AutoLaunchDVD">
A DVD video disc has been detected. Would you like to launch your DVD player now?

DVD
</Batch>

Sorry if its already been said but I would love to see the xbox 2 xbox ftp just like the one that is in Avalaunch. Its so nice to be able to connect two xboxes with a cross over cable and not have to deal with connecting them to a pc to transfer files. This is the only thing I miss.

Wow, Well atleast you have alot of support.... and a request list that would take a year to complete.. Let me first say good job, I love the fast loading, which is my main objection to MXM, It's best auto-dectecting the dirs we select.. Don't worry about IGR at this point, atleast some of us can just use an X2 bios for that.. Evox can take of flashing too, not like that's a daily use. As soon as I get my skin converted, Ill be reflashing my box with UnleashX as the new dash.. Kudos.
The only main feature I really want right now is an ability to customize the loading screen.
Prolly be a good Idea to fix the track skipping well using the virtual keyboard too.
I'm also looking forward to the WMA - skin vids support as well.

I may aswell add to this abundant list.
The FTP client as said by Unleashx is priority so thats sensational.
One thing if interested in cosmetic tips is to utilise the same technique for menu scrolling as evo-x. Where the selected item always remains in the central position of the list. The items above and below the slected item gradually have a faded out effect. I think this in itself is the finsihing touch that makes the app look very professiona

There have been times in games where shots deserved to be saved for use later in wallpapers and future dashskins.
Thats one reason I love pc emus so much. I have so many screencaps with zsnesw hehe

Auto media flag patch with the dvd copier. Just tryed to copy max payne 2 with the built in dvd copier and it didnt work, i then tried with pxhddloader and it worked fine. Its just a lot faster and smoother to have one built into the dashboard.
By the way UnleashX is a great dash, keep up the good work.

so far i love everything, but a suggestion I have is to be able to unzip files via scripting like:
<List Text="Unzip Files To C: Directory" Sort="Off" Batch="True">

Do you want to unzip these files?

Unzip Files

</List>
I think that would be the right scripting, The reason would to be able to make unleashx a basic installer app (say to install the mech fonts (using rename to rename the appropiate items), pbl, and unleashx to there appropiate places) i know it can be done in the file manager, but it would allot easier for the newbs to just select the option an it installs it to the correct directory. Also i know it can also be done via Rename and copy, but the ernie font is 15 megs and will not fit on a standard memory card (so it has to be compressed),
anyhoo, its just a suggestion

There is an XBE renamer than can be executed directly on the XBOX? or you need no rename on the PC and upload again the XBE?
joseph_hac
Dec 17 2003, 08:23 AM
When you launch an XBE, it says the name of the XBE
Example: "Linux Loading..."
andb it has the XBOX boot screen behind it. I think it would be cool to be able to customize that screen. Personally, I have my BIOS presets setup so my boot screen has a blue X and text. Having it green when loading jsut doesn't look right.
If you can't let us customize it, maybe you can release the next version with a couple of different color boot screens (blue, red, yellow), and we can install the XBE of the one that matches our BIOS.
