dude you dont need to do that anymore , you can speed up the fan in the bios but if the xbox an unmoded one go for it.
Edit:

you can solder another cable to it to make it longer ,eistein,

I just read something else.. and it showed they taped the black wire to the metal part like this..

so just to check if it would work.. I did that and turned on the xbox and it started spinning.. louder and it seems faster.
Will that be ok? I guess its at 12v now?

yes the metal box is the same ground tha the board uses , but you can do it in the bios if you have a moded one.

yep , but you could have done it in the bios without any wires change , dont know if that bans you from LIVE , cause it takes more power than it should.

It wouldn't ban you from live just because of a fan change..
how do you do it from the bios?

What exactly does the 12v fan mod do? Does it make your fan faster? And if it does, is it much louder?

I just want to clear up everything for all of you.. yes the bios can be hacked for higer fan speeds..
But what happens when you turn off your chip/bios to go onto Xbox Live for a few hours of Rainbow Six or Project gotham 2?
Your fan of course reverts back to factory setting and you hard drive will heatup just the same...
so ya if you want to cool your xbox , dont be lazy and do the wire mod.. thats unless you plan to never turn off your chip and play on xboxlive

I changed the fan speed with xbtools on my xbox w/ a matrix chip. And after ejecting the tray to load the MS bios to play xbox live the fan stays the same speed that I set it at. It seems that the xbox wont change the speed back down unless its shut off. I don't think this would work with a chip that has an on/off switch.
