It's time to start a new thread I believe.. people don't like looking through 32 pages of hard drives to try and spot their model!
(NOTE: THE OLD, LONG LIST IS AT THIS LINK)

First... a HUGE thanks for Morpheus99 for starting the original thread! beerchug.gif

Members ivc and lookformeb have both compiled some awesome drive lists - in the same week, without knowing that they were undertaking the same project! Both are awesome links - the main difference is that one can submit info directly to ivc's list, but can't view the drives missing model numbers; while lookformeb's has all the HDD's that were missing model numbers in the original thread (note: without model numbers, its impossible to tell exactly if your drive is lockable, but it gives you a slightly better idea if it's possible).

The links (in no particular order wink.gif ):
Lockability List #1 (ivc)
Lockability List #2 (lookformeb)
Lockability List #3 (MERKOSH)
Check all three links!!

Note: For any new information on hard drives, please submit to this thread as well! It will keep the tradition going, as well as help lookformeb update. If you have an extra few minutes, submit any new info to both this thread AND ivc's site!

- When you post the drive you've tested, it is imperative that you also post the model number!! These can be found on the labels of the hard drives. They really, really give people an exact idea of whether their new drive will work or not.
- The capacity, RPMs, and buffer size and software attempted are extremely helpful. Kit numbers are nearly useless for documentation just as posting without a model number is.

Useful Information: (thanks lookformeb!)
  • ConfigMagic FINAL is arguably the best way to lock your hard drive. It's simple and effective.
  • Hard drive "lockability" is technically known as "ATA Security Mode." On occasion, the hard drive manufacturer may indicate that their drive is compatible with the ATA Security Mode and it may not.
  • Just because a hard drive manufacturer says their drive is ATA Security Mode compatible, it does not mean it will work on the Xbox. It is well known that Maxtor claims that all of their hard drives are compatible, and they are not.
  • If you have a hard drive with similar specifications to one you see here, it DOES NOT mean it is the same drive or it supports (or doesn't support) the ATA Security Mode. The model number is the only sure way to know.
  • I stress once again, the only way to insure compatibility to know the model number.
  • A "debated" drive simply indicates that there are some people that could and could not lock their drive. This may have been because of an outdates version of the software they were attempting to lock with or some other unknown issue
  • The Western Digital WD800BB and WD1200JB appear to carry a bit of a risk when locking. There are many reports of lockability and unable to be locked. Perhaps there were separate batches of drives with different firmware versions on them. No one is really sure why.
  • The compiled chart without model numbers is the least reliable way to check for lockability. It is only there for documentation purposes and should be taken loosely.
Well, that just about sums it up for now. One more beerchug.gif for lookformeb and ivc!!

if you like to know what drive or brand is popular, look at this page on my site. It shows top 10 drives, model serie, brand, size, and a lot more. It's dynamicaly updated whenever a new drive is submitted.

You can load the program either via media or HDD... it works either way.

[edit] I just plugged in a Seagate ST3120026A and it really is almost silent. I had to listen real hard to hear the drive actually spinning (with the Xbox case OFF). Oh, and just for the record, this 120GB 7200RPM 8mb Cache drive is lockable with ConfigMagic like the list says.[/edit]

People! You're not reading the big red letters which say "AFTER RUNNING MAGIC YOU MUST RUN XBVSET BEFORE REBOOTING". If Xfree doesnt start for you, SSH in and type "xbvset", this should fix your issues.

thats not config magic. thats for gentoox i believe
Constantinou
yes but what is used for??

and pls anyone tell me where I can find a guide explaining ConfigMagic and all the features pls..... ph34r.gif

Magic is a feature of Gentoox, which is a Linux distribution for Xbox.

ConfigMagic is an EEPROM tool. Its most-used feature is its ability to lock/unlock your hard drive (using EEPROM data). As lookformeb already said, just run the program like you would run any other Xbox application, and press "Start" to open its menu of features. It's painfully simple, so please do not ask for a tutorial. You'll sooner see a guide walking you through making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Yes!!! biggrin.gif The Maxtor 300GB model K01J300 is lockable. I was nervous there for a while since the Maxtor 300GB model 5A300J0 was not lockable. I just ordered it this weekend at a discounted price from www.outpost.com and didn't even check to see if this drive could be locked or not. Anyways, I'm glad I will be able to replace my 120GB 5400 Western Digital HDD with no trouble at all.

Uhmmm... this may sound a bit dumb (please bear with me, it's very hard for me to read a lot of stuff in english as my english is really not that good), How do you use Config magic? do you burn the config magic final on a CD RW and then insert the disc in the xbox? Lock the HDD on the Xbox?
lookformeb
You can do it that way, yes.

Hi, i have an xbox v1.5 with a ALX2+ modchip installed. I have also got a WD 120GB (WD1200BB) drive installed, with evoX running on it.
If i boot the xbox in blue or red mode it works fine, but if i try and boot it in normal M$ green mode i get the service screen with error 13 showing.
I have used configMagic Final to lock the drive and it tells me that it is locked.
The standard HDD that came with the xbox works fine in all 3 modes but the bigger drive does not. blink.gif
Anyone got any ideas at all?

I have been looking through the forums but i have not found anything that answers my question. Any help or advice would be great.

Evox version 3935 also has the option to lock and unlock the hard drive but you must enable it in the evox.ini file first.

I don't know how good it is because I've never actually used it. Has any here?

I'm sure it fine...

ConfigMagic is basically the set standard though.

is the HD shown above compatible with executer2.3 lite/solderless? and is it a good hd? and will it fit in my x-box? are all HD's the same size?

chad2001, according to my list, that HDD has been reported as lockable AND not lockable. I would purchase that at your own risk.

All HDD's are the same width and length (for the msot part), but the height varies. Generally, the larger the HDD (GB's) the taller it gets.

model no - HDS722525VLAT80

according to Hitachi website this is a Deskstar 7K250

Both of the lockability lists do not have this drive. They dont even have IBM (which is wha the deskstar brand used to be) in the 200gb size.

Does anyone have any info on this drive/family?

"i know i know a terribly small drive but my wd 1200jb died on me mad.gif so i have to use a spare for now"

kind of dumb question, will a pc's bios pickup a locked drive during boot? I'm just trying to troubleshoot my drive a bit before i send it back. When i boot up the scan doesn't detect it so i didn't know if that was from the locking or not. It was a locked wd 1200jb, also since i locked this maxtor is it going to have the same lock code as the wd would since they are from the same machine?

I have this HD, 160gig and lockable with slayers_2.5

my specs also:

160 gig HD MAXTOR

HARDDRIVE LOCKABLE

love.gif The Western Digital 307AA is also lockable through hdlock.

Unlock and disable with hdunlock and hddisabl the original xbox HD. Use the full version of Winhex 11.2 SR4 to copy original xbox HD to new HD after zeroing the first 4096 sectors with hdprepar. Then use liveinfo2 beta to generate new lock password for HD, lock new HD with new password. This is just a summary of course, look for tuts here and all over the web. Real easy.

My Specs

Xbox 1.0
Dead Thompson DVD Drive
30GB 5400RPM HD
PBL 1.3
Evox 3935

Price of entire upgrade so far=$50 for dead XBOX + $10 for PSU + HD was free from friend = $60

Price of playing N64, SNES and NES games on an XBOX = priceless beerchug.gif

i have a Maxtor 6Y120L0, and 2 boxes- one with no chip, just modded via the font exploit (1.4), and one unmodded (1.1)- with an X-ecuter 2.3 on the way. I put a backup image of the 1.5 box before i did any modification on it to my new hd, and tried to use hdlock.exe to lock it, but i always get "drive not ready" and it doesn't work.
Everybody seems to agree that ConfigMagic is the way to go, but that means i'd have to have evox and a mod chip in the xbox to boot up without having it already locked right? Is there any other tool i can use to lock the new hd from my pc and just use it like a retail xbox untill the chip gets here? Or can i lock a drive on my pc remotely using configmagic from the xbox?

thanks for any help

I have read this thread. I have a question, Is it Manditory to lock the HDD or else it won't boot?

I don't want to lock the HDD. I'll be using a XBIT and Evox 3935 with the M7 bios.

So Will I need to Lock the HDD so that the xbox boots up?

What's the soul reason for locking it any ways?
ivc
you need to lock it to access xbox live or to enter msdash when the modchip is disabled.

Hi all, slight problem unlocking my original drive...

I have the unlock.exe method.

When I install my xbox hdd into my puter and boot, as soon as it starts to boot, it comes up on my monitor that "hard drive is locked" wants me to put a pw in before it even finishes booting with the startup disk. The amount of room it allows me isn't enough room for the real unlock code. It allows me 5 tries, then locks me out. "reboot and repeat process." There is no way for me to boot to the dos disk with my xbox hdd installed in my puter. Any ideas how to get around that?

Thanx in advance
