My 200 Gig Special Edition WD drive died on me yesterday and I'm not about to send it in to WD for a new one. I heard they will turn you in for MONEY once they get into your data and see what's on it. If any of you know what seagate does with your busted drive when you send it back to them, please let me know! I had that drive for not even a year and it stop working!

I will hire a local data recover personel to help me later.
I want to know which drive I should get.... I've read Seagate is the best and some says the Maxtor drive is the best. I want to get your opinion. I'm looking to get 160GB-200GB HDD, so help me decide.
Thanks!

from what i have read, segates are crap
maxtor has a real nice warranty system, and i have yet to have one of their drives fail me, except for when my power supply blew up :/(but it was all good, that HD was a 120 gig IDE< and maxtor sent me a brand new 160 gig SATA cause i still had the warranty)

thats bull shit. seagate is a reputable company which was even founded before maxtor. maxtor has said that all their drives have ata security on them but it is a lie, they do not. there are many reasons why i do not claim maxtor to be the best. i'd rather have a seagate of wd in my xbox than a maxtor. seagates tend to have a higher probablilty of being lockable too!

Maxtor may have a good warranty, but they won't pay you for lost data -- you have to back it up. The warranty is only worth the $100 or so the drive costs. I'd rather have a that won't bust in the first place.

Seagates are by far better, in overall terms of reliability, it's hard to say, I've had WD's, Maxtors, and seagates all die on me....the big differences? Well, more WDs have died in my possession and most that I know then any other brand...as for max and seagate, seagate is quieter for one, and for two, they replaced a dead drive for me twice with no questions, no currently valid warranty, no reciept...nothing. After the second fail they sent me a brand new one.

Do you mean they check the drive to see what content is on it, and if it is copied xbox games they turn you in and the feds bust you? This seams highly unlikely. Anyone else have more thoughts on this?

I thought it was BS too, but I want to make sure JUST in case. Can't put your gaurd down these days with all this RIAA and other greedy b*stards trying to sue you. But if any of you have return a drive to WD with your own personal backups of anything, post your comments here!
I'm looking to go with Seagate now, I will never look at another WD drive. I just can't believe that a HDD that is kept in an enviromental controlled room FREE of dust and static, DIES!

I don't mean to make anyone sound dumb or any thing. I have wd drives, thats all I will buy. I do know at one point, my computer would fail to show the hd at times. I thought my hd was going out. It ended up being the ide cable connector. Those cables are pretty cheaply made. I would check the cables and make sure those connections are clean. Take the ide plug and plug it in and unplug several times to insure they are clean.

ok, for the idiots that sed 'oooh go for wd' he DIDNT ASK FOR WD, he specifically asked maxtor or seagate, so heres my opinion
If you are running a quiet, passive cooled system i reccomend a seagate IDE (NOT SATA) because they can be about 25dB and produce little heat
If you are more of a game junkie go for maxtor, these can get pretty loud tho 30dB but have unrivalled performance, which outdoes most SATA performances
