Hi there,

I am a newbie. I did tons of searching everywhere about this question and did not find the answer anywhere. If someone could answer it or point me to the correct place to find it, it would be appreciated.

The question is on whether it is possible to instead of swaping the original xbox dvd reader with another one to swap it with a dvd-burner.

If the answer is yes, then which one should I use. Do i need to do any mods to the dvd-burner in order to get it to work? Which software would be available for usage?

What I want to do is be able to burn dvds or cds from within the XBOX. There might be a need to run linux on the XBOX, which I don't mind. But it would be better if it could be done from the desktop like Evox or something like that.

Why copy DVDs or CDs to the HD if you can burn a copy?

Thanks for the answer

i believe its possible....i think you need linux on the xbox as well as the firmware for the burner.....

as fara s why transfer a game to the HDD whne it can be burned to DVD id say that transfering to the HDD is cleaner and more efficienet....but thats just my opinion...

Only a genuine xbox drive or a modded 616e/f can read originals so there is no way a DVD burner could even read an original to burn it.

well having the game on the HDD is more efficient (it takes a lot less time to rip the game straight to the HDD than it does to burn it to DVD) and if you get errors, u can just erase it, but if u burn a disc and it doesn't work then you've wasted a disc. Apart from that, it's really nice when u want to take ur Xbox somewhere but don't want to carry all those discs with you.

Another question, why use Xbox to burn a DVD when ur PC could do it? Just put the DVD burner in the PC and burn the games that way.

Having a DVD burner in your xbox is not practical. You can't read original games with it and you can only read back up games on it only if you have a second burner on your computer that you would need to use to create the back ups. And if that is the case, then why not just put a regular DVD ROM drive on the xbox to read the backups since the burner feature would become useless?

Well the reason for this thinking is that I have a technology-impaired GF and relatives that want to use the burner to burn stuff like CDs and DVDs. I see that it would be much easier if I had a burner in the XBOX. That way I can teach my GF or relatives to burn the CDs or DVDs by going..."Here honey, put the disc in and then click on the menu item that says copy disc...and then insert blank disc when it tells u to."
Also, it is much easier to transport an XBOX around then lug my computer around.

The part that I don't quite understand is why is that if the dvd burner is hooked to a computer it can read and copy XBOX originals, but if it is hooked up to an XBOX it can't. Can't a DVD burner be modded to be able to read XBOX originals like how the other DVD Readers can?

perhaps, I should make the mod that allows u to plug in 2 DVD drives into the xbox? Would that work?

I am not sure what you are asking but I will try to pick through it.

You cannot burn CDDVD's from your xbox.
You cannot modify a PC-DVD to read an original game through your computer.
A PC-DVD installed on the xbox will only read Backups unless it is a Samsung 616t that has been modified.
A PC-DVD on the comp can only read backups burned in UDF format although you can make an Image of a backup that was GDFimaged (or alike)

Hope this helps.

thx for the clarification lepper!!

I got a side question after reading ur post. How is it possible for ppl to copy XBOX DVDs on the PC? Or am I misinformed, copying XBOX DVDs on a pc is a myth. Do ppl copy XBOX games by first ripping it on their XBOX and then FTP the files over to a PC?

Also, why is it that only a moded Samsung can read XBOX originals and other can't? What makes it possible for one drive to be able to read the XBOX original and other can't?

Also, I read the tutorial on how to mod the drive to get it to work, but do they have a explanation of why each step/mod is needed?

People make copies by using the dvd drive in their xbox to copy of the files, then transfering the files to their xbox over ftp. The samsung drive can read originals because it is almost exact to the samsung dvd drive that was used in some version of the xbox. You take the samdung dvd drive, reflash the firmware with the samsung drive from the xbox's firmware and reverse the motor. this allows the dvd drive to read originals. it is not possible for others to do so, because there is no firmware for them. As far as getting the drive to work..just follow the tutorials on xbox-scene step by step and it will work. hope this helps with your confusion.

pimpomatic, when he mentioned the samsung drive, he was talking about the samsung 616t which is a retail DVD-ROM drive that can be modified to read Xbox games. The Samsung drive in the Xbox is the SDG-605 which is the stock xbox DVD drive that u were thinking about, so they are two different drives.
