You need to plug the LPC programmer DIRECTLY into the parallel port.
I kept getting that error when trying to use an extension cable.
And don't forget a NEW 9volt battery,.

some people have also reported that they have to hold the programmer firmly into the parallel port

Try setting your parallel port to ECP + EPP (i.s.of ECP alone).

When your chip is connected to the programmer with battery, and the programmer is plugged into the PC, the light on the chip should glow a constant red.
This doesn't tell you that nothing is wrong, but it's a start.

my suggestion, buy a brand new battery, and make it the special super power electric ones, they make the chip much more likely to program correctly

Granted that you pointed out what the settings for the port were. Did you verify that these are in fact what the system bios is set for or are you going by what the device manager / printer software is reporting. Speaking of printer software. If any of these machines has any printer software or drivers installed then I would reccommend removing / disabeling them. They may be hogging the port. Some Lexmark and Cannon apps will do this as they believe that they are the only thing on the port and are always active, thus preventing anthing else from using the port.

I had the same prob. I checked out
http://www.xodus-chip.com/ and i changed my printer port i/o settings after checking device manager. I couldn`t flash it on my desktop but i got access to a laptop and it worked once I altered the i/o settings in winLPC.
I`ve installed it now but it glows red in mode 3

...... maybe it never flashed but it semed to work

In WinLCP what should the parallel port and the offset be? could it be wrong? Ive tried smashing it down and diffrent computers but to no avail.
EDIT!! I cant seem to find the I/O settings in the device manager where is it?

I'm having this same problem, I can read just fine, but it immediately fails when I try to erase, does this on two different computers (intel/amd).
I ran Milksop, and it returns with error -55, and says "Unrecognized device - aborting... are we all plugged in alright?"

Figured it out, I had to pinch the programmer to the chip... made me feel a whole lot better about it working...
Thanks for all the help, everyone!

I also had this problem when i got my chip yesterday. i had to pinch the modchip onto the programer while my brother flashed the chip... worked first time.
