i don't know if you have heard about this, but it appears (rumoured) 007 nightfire contains region protection. as unlike other ntsc releases played on a pal xbox, the video is not messed up, the game actually hangs! is this the first form of game modchip protection? Because obviously the only way you would be playing an ntsc game on a pal xbox is if it was modified. There is an obvious way around this. but is more protection (mod detection) going to appear in games???

Sure... course who is to say.
The developers got half a dozens way to get us. One of the easiest ways is to try to execute UNSIGNED code. A Successful execution would mean the system is Modded! I expect this from MS before I'd see it from any single developer.
Regardless... the better releases groups will circumvent ACTUAL protection schemes. Don't get too paranoid... MS is slow to act. The scene changes and adapts faster than they can.
Something to consider.... Avoid actually burning a release until you can determine if it is a nuke or not. Let it be someone elses headache.

Oh yes i agree i have burned several dvd compilations and have had quite a few nukes after the burn and a lot of headaches.
As of 007 yes it is true but i used the ntsc switch and can play it fine with no problems

Found it, tested it and it works!
Thanx m8!
The problem with the NTSC version of 007 nightfire only effects the levels that involve driving. If your telly doesnt support NTSC correctly and you have the switch disk you can play through the driving bits (including the very first intro / tutorial section) in Black & White and then change back to PAL for colour when you get to the shooting bits.
Strange one this, but if you look at the files in the iso there is a default.xbe and a driving.xbe, also the data files are in a folder called 30fps (or something like that), I wonder if the PAL version has a folder called 25fps or something?
I dont think this is intentional extra region locking, more something to do with timing on the driving sections or something.

I don't expect this from MS soon since sales of the xbox are going great since it's known to the masses that the xbox can be modded. MS is loosing money but they don't care. Anyone out there who still use Word Perfect ?
I expect big game studios ( like EA ) to start protecting their games sooner then MS

Modchip detection is very old. Its used or PS1, PS2. And now for Xbox. But every release from a group. W8 a day and w8 till it gets nuked or not. If not download it. And burn it.

The PAL game DOES have a folder called 25fps under a folder called "eurocom".
I am trying to run the PAL version on a NTSC XBOX and it hangs while loading. This may give some creedence to the idea that it is region protected. I dunno.

What do you mean
"Oh yes i agree i have burned several dvd compilations and have had quite a few nukes after the burn and a lot of headaches".
Does the backup copy of the game nuke your Xbox so it doesn't work?
Can this only happen when using a different region game?
Cheers
