I have no USB keyboard, and my computer is to large to move near the TV with my xbox, or even in the same room, so I have no way to test this out without a lot of running.
has anyone tried any of these replacement shells for DOS under any of the xbox dos emulators?

I would go with the first one, as the others seemed to be based around using a mouse. Well except for 4dos, but I wouldn't use that without a keyboard, as you will have to type just as much as with the ms dos shell (well, not just as much, as it has TAB completion, but if you don't have a keyboard that hardly a feature you would care about =)).
Bottom line, Norton Commander clones is the way to go. =)

I wonder if any of the others work well.

I just tried QubeDOS under VMWare and FreeDOS, worked like a charm.

alternative gui's for dos.
I mean, all windows (up to 98, me if you wanna get technical) consisted of was DOS with a few extra hacks and a new gui.
