Where can I buy the Xbox live headset for Xlink? Is the official headset the only thing that will work or can i buy something else that works just as good but is cheaper?

NO , cause the Live headset comes with the Communicator that plugs into the controller then the headset plugs into that , the communicator only comes with official one , unless a third party that i dont know of realeased one.

MadCatz has a replacement headset, but not sure if you can also get the piece that fits into the controller (basically you get a 2.5mm standard headset from MadCatz).
