Started my first dvd window today (which I will soon be offering as yet another service). I plan on spraying the plexi and my jewel (stock jewel) with UV reactive blue paint and then lighting it up along the edges with UV leds. So far I have cut the case and the plexi. Just waiting on my new saw bits for my dremel and the UV paint to finish it all up.

so when you start doing it for people, are you going to ask them to send you the whole xbox, just the case and DVD drive, or what?
NeO529
if all they want is a dvd window then they can just send me the lid to the case and the lid to the dvd drive. but most people want leds and stuff too.

Not bad... not bad at all.... But what I woulda suggested was that you done a design because DVD Window Mods are old news now. The only thing that makes them better is when the DVD Window is like a symbol or anything. Not bad for a plain mod though! wink.gif
NeO529
meh the UV will make it original... I used a grinding bit to cut this one (waiting on new saw bits) so I couldnt do a design. I also figured I should start out simple. Im hoping the UV blue looks as badass as I think it will.

I personally like the plain jane windows.

You can see more and it's a nice clean look. Original? Not really. But it's still nice looking.

I am still waiting on my UV paint and my dremel bits to get here to cut the dvd window and light up the jewel and window. I went ahead and drilled holes in the dvd metal for a guide when I cut it.

I am really excited to put a window in my case except I need a newbie rundown...I dont yet have a dremel and it seems like that is the only way to get a good looking cut...i have a hack-saw, coping saw, and an array of other tools - just not a rotary tool. What is the preferred type of dremel, how much will it run me?

Next.

I have plexiglass that is thin. Is the best way to do this mod to mount the plexiglass peice underneath the top of the case with a super-glue type adhesive?

Next.

Is it safe to cut through the metal case holding the dvd drive? How do I protect the laser? Masking tape, perhaps?

Any other tips, ideas, any information you can offer me would be EXTREMELY helpful, thanks!

Dremels arnt too much. I had one lying around the house i think mine was like 60$ CA. My buddy just bought one for 45$ CA. They arnt too much but you can get some real expensive ones with all the parts and everything for over 100$.

I just used Hot glue for my dvd window.

biggrin.gif I recommend removing the metal casing from the dvd drive before dremelling. It wouldnt be too smart to leave it on. Remove the case by unscrewing the 4 screws on either the underside or the side of the metal casing.

good job nice work im about to begin a huge mod to my box
NeO529
well, im havin trouble gettin my DVD lid to sit properly so I havent completed the mod yet and I decided to order a UV cathode instead of leds. But I did get my UV paint today and so I painted and installed the plexi. Here is a beautiful shot of it being lit up by the cathode from my computer:

I think this is gonna look so kickass when it's done.

What happens if you have UV CC lighting, but you just leave the jewel clear as is, no UV stuff on it?
NeO529
a dim purple lighting.
Ras
Well you see, I bought a red UV CC fan off of ebay, not realizing it was UV.
TeonHarasymiv
NeO529 I was thinking of using the UV paint idea for a case I am building. Can you please let me know, withount the UV light turned on does the plexi look clear? is it at all cloudy or anything? Thanks.
NeO529
RAS i'll buy the UV cathode from you man I need one. All I want is the cathode.

The window is a little bit cloudy but not too much. I think it looks awesome.
pedro
is trhat lit up by a uv cc or is it just a regular cathode
NeO529
in that pic its lit up by the UV cathode i pulled outta my pc for picture's sake. but i am buying a round cathode.
NeO529
Ive almost fixed the dvd problem. It read discs fine now its just a little noisy. Anyways I put the cathode that is in my pc under my xbox lid for some more pics. Here is one w/ the cathode off and one with it on. These are just to get an idea of what the lighting will be like when I am done:

the jewel in this pic has a round blue piece of construction paper behind it.

I am still tryin to find a sticker or something for the lid. The parts that look "rough" is hotglue to hold that spindle thing together.
pedro
awsome man.
I love it

it looks cool but that mod has become pretty stock lately the coolest windows are the ones that are a pattern im thinkin of doing one but it might be hard with my configuration right now im posting pics soon as soon as i repaint it then i can get some suggestions
Himura
hmmm...I dont think you need THAT much hoyglue to hold the spindle down.
NeO529
you do when it completely comes off.

I personally don't like the patterns too much because you cant see as much of the cd and I wasnt really going for creativity as much as I was looking badass.

Hey,
I did something similar with my window mod:

The jewel is just clear, no paint, the pcb is purely decorative, with a few traces painted.

The light is more evenly distributed than the pic suggests, I bought a UV one by accident too rolleyes.gif
