well i loaded a few mp3s into my music folder tonite to just check that everything was working which it was. then i tossed about 400 onto the drive and xbmc freezes up when trying to pull up the "my music" selection
any ideas?

Hmmm, don't know, I have about 10 mp3s on my hdd but mine does occasionally lock up when just browsing through files (never happened when browsing mp3s tho.)
I'd reccommed a newer build, but unless you can compile that's not much help atm.
Try disabling ID3 tag support (if it's enabled), perhaps that's the issue?
