Hi, I have a large rar file but when I unzip (with winrar) it creates a load of small rar files .r00,01 etc I then try unzipping the first but it gives an error "you need to start the extraction from a previous volume" - any help greatly appriciated

Sounds like you're adding it to another archive rather than extracting it. (NOTE: "unzipping" is a term used with with ZIP files...use some context.) Make sure you click on the EXTRACT button, because you will have a hell of a time finding the unzup button.

Sounds to me like he downloaded game composed of a few dozen rar files (.r00, r01, etc) that were then all rar'd into one archive.

But thats just me....

I third that, you got a *.rar or *.tar of another archive. Most likely from iRC

So basicly its compressed twice, do what Xeero says, by hitting extract, then after you've extracted the *.r00, *.r01, etc...

Double click the *.rar that you now have, and you will see the final contents of the game I hope you own.

Step 2 try to extract the first rar file (.r00) with winrar - I get several errors:-
