can it be done with ANY dvd ROM like that u can buy at a pc shop ?

No, it's got special drivers built in to read Xbox games. It's got to be one from another Xbox.

you can replace it with any old drive, but it wont read originals (only backups)
and of course you wont be able to disable your modchip

well i want to be able to play my originals

yeah, okay. Theorhetically, you can replace it with any DVD drive. BUT yeah, it won't read original Xbox discs. Also, the power supply cord is different. You'd have to split power from your HD...
It's not that you won't be ABLE to disable your modchip. It just won't work properly without it on...
Check the Buy/Sell Forum for people selling used ones. Or check Ebay.. Just look up Xbox Samsung, Xbox Phillips, or Xbox Thompson.
