Ive been looking for some time for an external programmer + program combination that works with the aladdin advance without any luck.

Does anyone know of an external programmer + program that can be used to flash aladdin advance bios?

Thanks pro.

ps. Only I've heard of it being reflashed is from a local programmer that makes his own flashing tools.

A cheapmod programmer will flash the aladdin but you will need to fit a 2 x 8 way header socket to the board. The easiest way is to get or build a cheapmod programmer and also get a board with the socket on that takes the SST chip. I got mine from Interesting Devices.
Just take the SSt out of the aladdin socket and pop it in the cheapmod board and flash no problems.
It WILL NOT work doing it that way obviously if the Aladdin does not have a removable SST49LF020.

this shows the programmer and also look for the cheapmod lite which is PCB with the socket and header.

what do u do next?

it would be great if we could get some sort of tutorial up as there isnt anything else like it on the web.

Once you have them its a doddle.
You need the programmer, the cheapmod lite board, a serial cable to connect to the pc and a 12v power supply. Optional is a PLCC removal tool I got one for £2.45 (UK). It makes removal of the SST chip a doddle.
basically connect the programmer to the pc via the serial cable and fit your SST chip into the socket on the cheapmod board.
Use Win LPC to flash the chip. All you have to do is click on open and open the 256k bios file you want to flash to the chip, select on the screen the com port you are connected to and click write. About 2 minutes later job is done. This programmer will flash an Aladdin with header socket fitted and also flashes the Terminator mod.
Its very good and it works

so there is no soldering?

also whats a serial cable?

A serial cable is a cable for the PC. The same site that sells the programmer also sells the cable. Is the SS49LF020 fitted in a socket on the aladdin if so you can unplug it from the socket and program it all from the PC by fitting it into the socket on the cheapmod board. The picture you have shows the socket on the cheapmod board with a chip already plugged in.
The serial cable connects between one of the COM ports on the PC and the programmer

sorry got a bit lost there.

yes my chip is socketed.

so i buy those 2 items i posted and a cable to connect to the pc.

but how do i connect together the programmer and the socket so i can plug the chip in? do i have to solder? or can it just plug straight in.

The square chip shown in the picture just plugs in and out of the socket. You can lever it out with a paper clip or buy a removal tool that has 2 prongs these clip under the corners of the chip, you squeeze the tool and it pulls out the chip.
No soldering required

no i dont mean the plcc chip on the mod chip. what i am on about the how do u connect the socket to the programmer so that the plcc chip can be flashed.

so we have the following:

socket for plcc> programmer > serial cable > pc

The cheapmod board (top pic in your post) has a female header socket and just plugs in to the male pin header on the programmer.

nice 1 mate. might think about getting 1.

Interesting devices supply a full instruction sheet and the flashing software on disc as well so it makes it easy to follow and to do.
Good luck

Yep the programmer will programme cheapmods, Terminators aladdin with a header socket fitted and of course the chip itself. Tried it on these so far if I get any others I wil try it on some other mods.
