I am going to get a 160 Gig. drive but noticed that the WD was cheaper than the Maxtor. But Maxtor never fails me. The modle # I am looking at is WD1600JD.
WD1600JD Has any one done it yet or know if it is compatible.

Can't really go wrong with WD - my xbox came with one. Had a 120GB WD in my box that worked great and even locked - before an unfortunate locking incident (it's posted here somewhere). Replaced it with 8MB (they don't recommend) cache Maxtor 120GB that's worked great for me ever since. Maxtor locks fine as well...
I'd say both are safe bets - and if you buy it from a Fry's, they take ANYthing back.

I have installed two Maxtors 1 200 Gig and 1 120 Gig both went very smothe and didnt have any problems what so ever. That is why I am hessitent with the Western Didgital. And as for the sound my is no louder then when I bought it.

seagate all the way man...blow both maxtor and wd away in many areas man
and i have all of these drives...seagate 160 gig 8mb cache is in the xbox and locked beautifully....config magic final...its very quiet...it does get a bit hot during many hours of continous gameplay around 39C 40C tops...you can use an extra fan accessory for 15 bucks or do the fan hack with bios, or the 12v fan hack to cool it down a bit...but its this way with any 7200rpm drive in such a tight space...the seagate i have in my computer (used to have a wd until it had a high pitch whine) has a fan blowing over it with good case airflow only reaches 29C after gameplay, normally it stands at 24-27 C ....
anyways..this is a bit long winded...go for seagate man...its quiet and very well made

I'm a Seagate man too, long time Seagate buyer. However, I've never had any real problems with Maxtor or WD.

lol... just to summarise: "Pick whichever one you want!"
Personally i use a Western Digital - I've had a few bad runs with Seagate and never used Maxtor - but i hear Maxtors are quite good and Seagate have improved.
So yeah - take your pick.

LOL The hard drive topic is so much fun no mater what type of forum you talk about it on....
EVERYONE has had a hard drive go bad and as a result they hate that brand and swear by another brand. Just get which ever you like better and or is bigger/cheaper. WD Maxtor Seagate its all the same.....

Just installed the mator 160g in today in another xbox. Used slayers and it shows the temperature of the hard drive (my older 200G doesn't). Third install never a problem. Yes it is slightly louder then some maxtor I've heard though...

Seagate Seagate Seagate!
Unless, of course, you like the sound of a v12 engine coming from your xbox...

Well it seems to me that my Maxtor 200 Gig and my friends Maxtor 120 Gig work fine and are silent. But I do have two 30 Gig Seagate Baracudias in my desktop and I love them. And my laptop has a 60 Gig Western Didgital. I love them all. But I think I am going to stay with Maxtor for the XBox because I havent had any problems with them at all.

I had to get a replacement maxtor drive as I thought my pc was off and I went to plug the power into my 120gb Maxtor. it didnt power up so I got it sent away and I get a lovely 200gb one back which wasnt accidental.
im surprised they aint like other shit companies that would have you wait forever till they have some to ship excellent customer service.
I have a seagate in my pc and my original xbox HDD is a WD.
