I just tried this nexgen dash its the worst dash ive ever seen !
unleashx
Why not tell the devs what and how you want it to look like, instead of putting it the way you did?
Dunny
yeah I think that post lacked any constructive criticism

Thanks for theese most helpful posts.

all the criticism that we keep getting is about the look of neXgen. The releases we are putting out are not the final version by any means. We release them to get feedback for functionality and what users would like to have added not how the skin looks.

The skin that is used is there for testing and for skinners to take a look of how it all works so that they can make their own skins for neXgen. So this debate about looks is getting very old and starting to ware thin amongst users that are aware that theese are test releases and us the developers.

If you have any useful information to give then give it if not just stay clear of the neXgen forum it's not for you.

P.S.

and nexgen isn't? blink.gif
Thanks for putting your foot in your mouth.
LESTAT
foot in your mouth lol hehehe

yeah but the whole thing about nexgen is,, this supposed "work in progrss" has been a work in progress for how long now ??
the criticism isnt about the look, although im sure thats some of it,, the criticism is because basically,, without a doubt,, the dashboard is poo.
how long has it been out ?
how has it REALLY improved ?

i am NOT a programmer, but i have for a long time been involved in projects ranging from homebrew apps , to windows programming
and although i have never been involved with any xbox projects i still must say,, whom ever is programming this, let someone else do it, or possible tie in with someone and pool your knowledge together.
ive said it before,, unleashx came out of no where i dont even know if anyone heard of this until it was released and it was a near perfect release,, (i use perfect loosely but the glitches were VERY minor) and nexgen has been floating around NOT being worked on and NOT being used for how long? i dont know but i know ive seen the name and dashboard at "you know where" for a very long time.
so yes i think we all realise that its just now being redone or reworked, but still. the argument is there, what improvements. and who is testing it. you released it last week and the thing didnt even boot. thats not a flaw thats downright stupidity.
was it even tested or just stealing code from other dashboards hoping it will work for nexgen. ?

im as openminded and willing as the next guy to try new stuff,, but not when the new stuff has been out for ages and has nothing but a history of bad things.
SpOoK
Some people must be still confusing the the two neXgen teams.

0.95 and build released before that were released from a totaly different team of people and then the updates just suddenly stopped.

v1.0 of neXgen is being worked on by the XDashOS team who started working on it once the sources were made public. Now if you get the source release and compile it and give it a test you will know that it was very limited in what it could do. You couldn't even get a list of Games, Apps and Emu's from it. Now if you get the version we are working on you can clearly see what we are doing and whats added. There is alot of work ahead to get it upto scratch and we are aware of that and are making progress. We can't spend every minuite on neXgen as we do have real jobs and family to consider we just do it for fun and to give users that extra choice.

The Fixed release was released because the person that packaged it didn't have the updated skin set and was unaware of the changes that were made and that is what caused alot of the problems. This was pointed out to us when Dunny posted his cfg file.

Fucking twat. Stop making these shit threads they defeat the board.
LESTAT
you tell me right here right now how its being childish telling the truth,, and the truth is nexgen is very poorly coded, very poorly executed,, and go ahead and download the "FIXED" version from you know where,, it still dont work. and like i said in the "release thread" if you expect someone to throw this on the root of C and try to boot their xbox your friggin nuts man.
it should be able to run from ANY folder on ANY of the partitions just like EVERY other application and dash out there.

and tell WHERE you have EVER seen ANY of the apps or dashes use this

<Games>EXTENDED:/games;STORAGE:/games</Games>
<Applications>EXTENDED:/apps;STORAGE:/apps</Applications>
<Emulators>EXTENDED:/emu;STORAGE:/emu</Emulators>
<Sounds>c:/skins/waves</Sounds>
<DVDPlayer>Extended:\Apps\dvdx\default.xbe</DVDPlayer>

wtf is EXTENDED and STORAGE,, who has ever labelled stuff extended and storage, no one thats who.

but THAT isnt really a big deal it can be edited.
the big deal is that F:/Apps E:/APPS F:/Games E:/Games and Emus have been the places that ALLLLLLL apps and dashes use. why ? cuz that is how the X recognises them. those are the partitions names.
why even TRY to change it.
now if extended and storage mean E and F, and is coded into it, well your the first,, which theoretically thats cool but again i ask where has it ever been used ? ive never even seen those mentioned anywhere.

personally YOUR acting like a child because i havent seen one person say they like it and your just being pissy about it.

im looking now for the thread about fixing the nexgen dash not booting but again i thought this was a fixed version,, not a "its fixed we think" version

LESTAT you obviously have not used a dev kit before have u? the X doesnot pick em up as c: e: f: But the creators of the other dashboards have named em like that.
LESTAT
i wont admit to using a pirated piece of software simply because if you do have the real dev kit,, well,, its not legally obtained. why? cuz i would pray to god that if you were a real xbox dev, that you could program better than this.

and from what i have "tested" under windows it most certainly does recognise it as c d e x y z

ok anyways.

the fact still remains that the "fixed" version at "the binz" still does not work,
the fix that is here in the forum does not work.

and all the other people just so happen to be using c d e f why do you suppose that is ??
because a DEV KIT might see the xbox as whatever you called it,, but what does all others see it as ?? i bet its c d e f ,, ok now if im wrong,, then kindly tell me why in the world does E V E R Y other programmer use the c d e f standard,, ease of use ? sure ok,, but why else? cuz thats what is used.
you are the 1 and only person thus for to use the standard you are using,, now ,, if it DOES infact work great it works but something is not right here,, and since the limited xml file and nfo tells you nothing of any interest,, well,, ive tried the defualt xml ive tried changing the <skins> line in the xml ive tried changing the skin line to read f/apps/nexgen/skins and it STILL wont work i even copied the skins folder to the C drive,, guess what,, it dont work,,
it boots to a black scrren and the xbox locks,, its locked because when i hit eject the xbox reboots,, and that ONLY happens when something has locked the box.
so i dont know if your testing this on a debug xbox or an xbox with devkit stuff on it,, i dont know,, but my xbox is as regular as you get,,
so,,,

why dont it work

and if your posting a "fixed" version on ,,well you know where,,, then you might want to make sure it actually works..

infact,, TO ME,, pure laziness or the fact that nexgen simple dont work is the reason "you know where" still has an old version. unless the laziness falls on the crew at binz.

anyways,, im done with nxgen i gave it a try,, it wont work never will work and i still have yet to see 1 single person say they like it and will use it. (that is a reality you will just have to accept my friend)
this dash is FAR beyond beta testing, it sbeen out since before 2003(if memory serves me correctly) and still we are in an alpha stage, but thas not the issue. i understand when people dont have time to work on things of this nature.

ok im off my soap box.

good luck programming this and i hope that you actually come up with a working version that can be labeled "working" and it actually means it works.
and by works i means it also runs from the E or F drive inthe Apps folder, just like e v e r y other app and dashboard out there. simply put ANY new dash should N E V E R berun from the root of the C drive,,, if i had done that and changed the bios to boot o nexgen guess what id be sitting here with an unbootable xbox.
Dunny
Fixed version works for me. wink.gif

You do seem to be missing the point that the dash is still in its early stages. Extended and Storage are the E & F drives, you can already see the devs have began altering this because the XML file now includes correct drive letters for various ADDED tags.

as Spook said if you want to see what progress is being made try loading the original Nexgen release and the latest version, you'll see an ADDED XML file with more options, background music and sorted scrolling speed on the menus.

just wondering how you can say that they arent making any progress when you havent even managed to load the latest release?
The LukeMan
Its a cause for concern that this topic about me sayin nexgen sucks is the most popular topic on the XdashOS forums

To get neXgen to boot from your apps folder

Put:

* Skins
* nexgen.xml
* nexgen.cfg
* nexgenhttp.dat
* nexgenmedia.dat

To either the root of C, E, F or G

and put the XBE in your apps folder and it will boot whats the problem with that?

or it can be
C:\nexgen, E:\nexgen, F:\nexgen or G:\nexgen

if put into a nexgen subfolder change the XML entries for the waves:
<Sounds>c:\skins\waves</Sounds>

SYSTEM, Extended all work fine the problem is that neXgen is looking in specific paths to find the information it needs. This will be worked on in upcoming preview releases.

So neXgen doesn't have to be your default dash to run it just requires a little extra work to get it to run. I don't see any major problems putting the Skin and cfg files to a root drive or in a nexgen subfolder you can dump your xbe where ever the hell you want and it will run but move the skin files out of it's search path and you will get problems trying to get it to run.

Hope that clears up getting it to run without being default dash. Any problems or comment welcome but please can the flame wars die down.

Avalaunch made 1 mistake with the Pal --> NTSC switching and people came down on them like a ton of bricks but before that they were the bees knees so mistakes are going to be made in the development process nothing is always perfect same problem with the switching in an early MXM release that caused the same issues with zeroing out peoples eeproms.

I don't even think your read his post on that issue. The developers choose to name it like that. Kinda like some ftp apps say "c:", and some just say "c". I believe it is labeled by partitions1-6, not by drive letter.

Anyway... Nexgen has lots of potential but I think a hacked M$ dash is far better biggrin.gif

mmm, well I was wondering if I should try Nexgen, I take it, it's not a viable alternative to evoX yet?
Judging by the post's in this thread I'll think I'll hold back?

One man's trash is another's treasure.....kudos to all you developer's who take time out of your own lives to make apps and dashes for the unappreciative masses!!!!! I personally have not tried this dash lately...but constructive criticism goes along to improving things.....

Granted it has a few bugs.. But it looks great.

Keep up the good work!!
