My Xbox mobo was sitting over 50 degrees C and I figured that was too high so I decided to do this air intake fan mod tutorial.

It has effectively lowered the temperature by 10 degrees!

Download here and let me know what you guys think. It's in a rarrer Word format.

thats pretty cool
sega27
Very neat. You might want to show that the fan can share power with one of the power sources on the mobo.

Mirrored for you as 225 Kb PDF, as opposed to 3.5 MB rar. smile.gif

Nice little tutorial! I'm going to add a link to it in the FAQ post!

It may be just me, but your link isn't working.

EDIT: Disregard what I said.

Cheers guys.

Thanks for that Brahm. I didn't have the facility to make a pdf unfortunately...

that is a pretty good little tutorial, though I wouldnt solder to the bottom of the psu. seems a little risky to me and plus it would be much easier to draw the power from a hdd power splitter or if you wanted, you could solder to the pins that the yellow dvd cable plugs into on the MB (back side of course) there is a 12v source on one of those pins.

I was actualy thinking of doing this mod before I saw this. I think palmore did it except only on the other side blowing over teh psu.

combining this with a heatsink on the mcpx chip would mean a drastically lowerd temperature..

damn, so many mods I have in my mind to do right now bu tso little money to do them.

The reason I soldered straight onto the PSU was for 2 reasons.

1. So if I have to take the MB out at a later time I don't have to unsolder anything

2. I already have a molex connector behind the HDD which is used to power up the jewel LEDs. It would've been too crowded if there was any more wire there.

Good point with using the 12v from the DVD. Like I said, use whatever 12v point you like smile.gif

I did check out the other tutorials, but IMO, they made the Xbox look a little mutilated (no offence). I wanted this to look as neat as possible and cool the MCPX down in the process, which is why it's on the opposite side of the Xbox.

Sega27 - Those fans won't work, you'd never get it to fit in the Xbox.

I'm sorry everyone, I don't know where you can find a fan like the one I used, in the US. The CPU HSF I got it off was a no-name brand ball bearing type.

It wasn't expensive at all. I'm sure most computer shops would have something that is comparable.

The thinner the fan, the better cool.gif

That is a little exxy, but it will do the job.

They say it's whisper quiet though.

deviation56:
Werent you the one who put a fan directly on the mcpx chip?

I was just wondering how thick that fan is. I know it is 40mm but it could still be used if it is 10 mm thick. I was thinking of buying thath chipset cooler lit you used and putting the heatsink on the chip and using the fan on the side like this tutorial said.

the heatsinks was 6mm and the fan was 10mm, so a total of 16mm altogether, the only prob with your idea is that the 40mm fan wouldnt push much air at all and would be pretty useless as an intake fan
deviation56
@Dreamcazman

What do your CPU and motherboard temps average at?
Ben999_
That is very cool (har har) mod. I like how it leaves the case looking stock from the outside.

Yeah, I love the final pic and how it looks unmodded, but these 60mm by 10mm fans are extremely hard to find except for these sunon ones but they are extremely ugly, not to mention loud
deviation56
*bump* for teh sweet tutorial
sk8phreak88
hey i read the posts and the tut and i was wondering if i could use the stock xbox fan i replaced that with a 80mm one and now have the stock one just lyin around if it does i think ill do it this week or tomorrow. thanks
deviation56
it would be way to thick, if he had to do some cutting to get a 10mm thick fan to fit, i imagine a 25mm thick fan or whatever the stock fan is would be impossible to fit
sk8phreak88
DAMN ok o well maybe i could find one for cheap hopefully ill check thos sites when i get some time. thanks for the quick responce

this is the one im gonna order:

http://store.yahoo.com/maxcooler/casfan60byad.html

most of the other sites sell the sunon brand which is extremely loud, thats why im going with that site
sk8phreak88
if im interpreting this right that fan is only 3.75 am i reading something rong all the ones i found were liek 13 or more
deviation56
yeah its only 3.75 and then like 3.85 for shippng so a toal of 7.60... most of the other sites sell the crappy sunon brand for around 10-15 but this fan is a different brand, so its cheaper
sk8phreak88
oh kick ass ill be buying one very soon thanks devation for ur help and kick ass tut

are you gonna order the fan from the site i posted before or do you have a different site?
Dreamcazman
Hey Deviation, you wanted to know my temps. Sorry I haven't been back here in a while, over 12 hours time difference tongue.gif The fan should work great too btw...

Before mod, load temps for CPU was 61C, MB was 53C
non-load temps (at Evox screen) around 2-3 degrees cooler

After mod, load temps for CPU is 54C, MB is 43C
non-load temps, around 1-2 degrees cooler

It does make a huge difference! We have summer here in Australia too and it does get pretty warm during the day.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It feels good to be able to contribute something back to the 'scene'. It's very much appreciated beerchug.gif
deviation56
well as of now before doing this mod i get:

43C for the cpu
34C for the mobo

so hopefully I can at least another 3-4C lower with this mod smile.gif

Holy, I have never seen an Xbox run that cool..

I assume it's winter in your neck of the woods?

its about 21C outside during the day... but i'd say those are reasonable temps considering everything i've done to it (check the link in my sig)...

but i think its mainly because of my adjustable speed fan, basically adjustable fan = adjustable temps
mastercheef
Great tut man, i'll definately be doing this at some point.
Parrappa
in the tut, it says....."make sure you have the fan adjusted so it is blowing air into the xbox"...
is that correct?? I was always under the impression you always want air to blow out............I'm still new to xbox modding so there is still quite a lot I don't know........

you definately want your main fan to be blowing out, but since this is an intake fan mod, you want to have it blowing in... if your worried about dust or anything, just stick a filter in there over the fan

Nice tut, 54c on the cpu? ouch!
Mine is at 36c/33c when playing 4 hours of Need for Speed:Underground.
I have the 12v mod on the cpu fan and 80mm ghetto style side mounted fan.
Im still waiting the rip off xbox cooler to come from Egay. smile.gif

eh my idea, lol!!! are you gonna try and put the 80mm fan in the side fan thingy from ebay? if thats what your doing, let me know if it works
deviation56
I just completed this mod using this:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_in...6878&pfp=SEARCH

that cooler includes 2 60x10mm fans and the power wires are attached so i decided to put both of them in... ill take pics as soon as my xbox is back together
xenocyde
yeah, if you want cooler temperatures, make it go blow out..

nice job though... that doesn't look like a panaflo though... if you want quiet while having good air flow, get panaflo

its simple, either ground the black wire coming out of the fan or buy a molex splitter with a 3 pin connector coming out of it
Parrappa
is it good to 12v mod the cpu fan if you got a 1.0 xbox?
I don't think I've ever seen that mentioned be4
