You guys should be ashamed! How hard is it to drag the mouse to an age group? Or is it that thinking of your age is too stressful and hard?

He is, don't question it.. hehehe.. I have seen him say that in other posts as well... So, care to share the secret of eternal youth? I think I would have killed myself long before I ever got to be that old if it were possible. Car crash, plane crash, something would have done me in. Unless I were superman, hey, does superman live forever? Anyone else like Smallville on WB? That show kicks ass. Let's see how far off topic I can go with this..

I seriously doubt that 50% are 18-24.... look at all the posts where the person can't even search a forum, or read a few tuts. I honestly think the average age hovers around 13-16, and most were lying on the pole (for some reason, teens want to fake like they're old enough to buy alcahol =-).
Gackt uses necromancy to reanimate his corpse when he dies, and stays eternally young by bathing in the blood of virgins once a moon.
I'm going to be 21 this December, to get back on subject.

Well let's see...
Back in my day, if you wanted to play a video game, you'd have to spend hours and hours and hours typing it out from the back of a magazine!

Nov 7 2002, 04:43 PM
Well then - you must remember Avaoln Hill games!! Remember Squad-Leader? On the hexagon boards and the little cardboard tanks and the 300 rules you had to process (and random values obtained by throwing dice 10 0r 12 times) and keep track of every move?
Ahhh.... THAT was entertainment!!!

I was around before Pong. My school's computer dept. was a few typewriters, and if you were good, they let you work on an electric one. Cable tv just started and we could get all 13 channels, if it wasn't to windy outside.

Man, when the first PC was out, I was already well into copying games via cassette drive on my Atari 400. I remember going to copy parties where we had stacks of dual cassette players and spent hours swapping games on cassettes. Anyone remember Compute Magazine? Lots of hours of programming from those mags, just to make a simple frogger game. All those damn data statements!!!
10 Welcome to my data hell, goto 20
20 data 10,22,61,35,52,73,63,72,1,73,72
and on and on with those data statements, and one wrong # and the program didn't work.. that was hell if you had a typo in one of the data lines. I even modded my Atari 400 though, upgraded from 4K of memory to 48K and built an external keyboard with real keys, not those flat ones. You could actually use the keyboard on your lap.

Made out of wood and plexiglass. Had a power switch on it also. Those were the days...

Ahhh yes.. Compute magazine. I remember spending hours typing out the programs for my VIC-20 computer, if anyone remembers that! In fact, I think I still have a whole bunch in storage.
Then there was the joy of printing them out on a NOISY dot matrix printer. Had to close the door to the room and go downstairs just to get away from the sound of it. SCRREEEEEEECHHHHHH ... SCRREEEEEECCCCCHH.
BUt then again, that was also the days of the Atari 2600, with its ONE-BUTTON joystick, a couple of paddles, and a button pad with tons of buttons for one game (can't remember at the moment).
PS. Scooby Doo rocks! I still watch it on Cartoon Network, though I don't care for the "scooby doo gang" version with the little kids

yeah - I am amazed when I see my daughter watching Scooby on Nick Jr. Makes me want to cry...
I used to have a 1-button joystick.
I am going to start another post - "What was the first computer game you ever played?"

What was the first COMPUTER game you ever played.
For me it was that bi-plane "pong" type game that was 2-player at the arcade. You flew around a 1D screen and could have a single shot in the air at any one time, but had to wait until it left the screen to "fire" again....
I guess the first REAL computer game I played was that text-based Cave Adventure compiled on COBOL.

I think I out grew Scooby-doo, its a great cartoon, but seen em all. My fav cartoons now are Justice League and He-Man on Cartoon network, also X-Men Evolution on WB. Batman Beyond kicked major a$$, I am so bummed it was canceled. Same boat as Dark Angel, good shows gone over budget and met the axe.

Hmmm, my very FIRST computer was a commodore 64. It plugged into the back of the TV, and you loaded the carrtridges from the side. Space invaders rule!
/me is waiting for the first 14 year old to say Pentium was their first computer

C64 was my 3rd or 4th computer, Tandy CoCo, Atari 400, Apple II, C64, C128, XT PC, 286-P4. Not mentioning all the consoles I had, Colecovision, Intellivision, Atari 2600/5400/7200 and so on...
Actually, the C64 was the first computer I had that used floppys, I was so amazed by how fast they were compared to casettes. Can you imagine waiting 1-1/2 hours for 1 game to load from casette, the whole time making an aweful screeching noise. Then play the game, die, and have to reload to play again. I remember The Last Starfighter being like that on my Atari 400... moon patrol, pooyan, pitfall, Jame Bond Moonraker.. sooo many fun games back then..

While I do love the nostalgia of playing my old favorites, they still are exactly that. Example: I dont want to see space invaders 2004 on xbox. THe only game I would want re-done, would be Metroid baby! That we when she gets naked at the end, you could have live video action

Im pretty sure its the same, c64/128- but I remember something that I think was an addon for the 64, the vic20? it played tapes that were games, regular cassette tapes. I remember plugging them into a stereo and hearing the worse sound ever, a high pitched eeeeeeeeeeeee
lol
the best game on the c64 was "transformers"/"ghost busters" and probably "the way of the exploding fist", and I guess "law of the the west" was rad too.
Ace25
Nov 7 2002, 10:33 PM
C64/128 were not the same, although they really never made much for the 128 to support the extras it had. I think the 128 had a 1571 floppy drive, which was better than the 1531 the C64 had. Taxing my brain trying to remember all the hardware parts back then. The Vic20 was a PC a few years before C64, so it was not an addon. You are correct about the tapes, that is exactly what they sounded like when loading. High pitch eeeeeeeeee, pause, eeeeeeeee, pause.. for an hour for a 20K game. Ghostbusters was a pretty fun game on C64. Got pretty frustrating though if I remember right.

HAHA. Sinclar ZX Spectrum (or something like that). It looked like a calculator with oversized ruber keys. I think it had 16k of memory. You needed an interface the size of a pack of smokes to plug in a joystick and of course tapes were the data storage method.
Those were the days.
