how can i repair a corrupt .tar archive? the only thing ive found is "advanced tar repair" software but it costs like $50 USD. is there anything free? there are tons of .zip repair utlities...

Try opening it up in a text editor, you might be able to get some data out like that. AFAIK, .tar doesn't compress at all, rather bundles multiple files up into one.
