Full Version: Error21, Games Wont Boot From Evox Dash? Help!
Scenyx Entertainment Community > Xbox1 Forums > Dashboard Forums > EvolutionX Forum

ok, i have an x2 lite installed, with slayer's AWESOME auto install of evox. everythings been fine, until tonight, when i tried booting games from dvd, it went to evox dash, and when i pressed boot from dvd/reset, it just reset back to evox dash over and over. i searched and found i may need to reset my clock with the ms dash, and when i go to the ms dash from system utils, it gives error21?

i can reboot and it will go away, just wondering whats up? anyone know?
XBOX420
Ya when I tried his installer I asways got that error 21 thing, then I said fuck it, reformated my HD
with original backup & then just copied the the newest Evo dash to my C root, & pressto nomore error 21.
rustyself
cannot boot to my ms dash. i get error21 and flashing red/green led. i hear it has something to do with my evox.ini. is there anyway to edit the .ini, make another slayer iso with that .ini, and put it in my machine and let it redo my hdd? i do not have an ftp setup with my box, and (DOH!) i didnt back up my drive prior to installation.

if i unplug my box, or the power goes out, and the clock is reset, how will i adjust the time so my box will work, if i cant get into my ms dash? am i fuxored?

thanks for everyones help on this,

rusty

update:

ok, i think ive narrowed it down to the msxboxdash file on the slayer disc image being the wrong version for my box.

now, heres the question: i have 2 or three different ms dash versions. can i replace the msxdash file on the slayer disc to one of those, reinstall the slayer disc, and trial and error it till i get the correct version?

If you backed up your original C: partition before you started modding, you should have the right version
for your xbox...

If you didn't.... not too bright wink.gif
rustyself
i got it.

it may not have been too bright. you ever got excited about something and jumped in too quickly? yes? did you have someone telling you that youre not too bright? wanna tell us about it so you can finally let it go?

the answer was simple, actually. just took me a while to figure it out.

if anyone else is having trouble with no ms dashboard/error 21 after installing slayers disc, read my post on page 10 for the fix.

Cool.
I want to know how you fixed it.
Page 10 of what?

Could you post a link?
rustyself
oops sorry...

page 10 of slayers auto installer thread:)

The error 21 with Slayers Evo-X autoinstaller is has become quite common lately. When you said that you had narrowed it down to the msxboxdash.xbe, you were correct. All you have to do is find the correct version which I am guessing on yours will be like 1.32mb, add that to the installer under system/retail and system/large and it should work fine after that.
erexx
I *thought* that would be and is a problem.
The M$ dash.xbe must be the same kernal version of the Xbox with "some" exceptions.
Nice work 1wolf1.

This was a point of concern in these forums awhile back.

I tried to build a "universal" recovery disk using the EvoXHD installer
but quickly ran into this problem with between a 3944 and a 4034 xbox.

I thought that it had something to do with the xboxdash because there were so many folks
deleting their original dash's and requesting new ones.
Often the same user would come back and state that the new dashboard file
they tracked down did not work.

How can i know the kernel version of my xbox ?

Thanks,
Matbou

Yes, I would like to know too because I have the same problem, have gotten 3 different dashes but they are all the same size and all do the same thing (error 21).

matbou

Simple.
Goto the MSDashboard,
dont do this if you have Xbox live without deactivating the modchip first,
Goto Settings
Goto System Info.
At the bottom of the legal speal there will be to values K: and D:
K:1.00.4973.01
D:1.00.4034.01

The D value given is always given as the original hardware kernal version.
I am not sure what the K: value represents... Anyone?

If there is nothing at the end then you have an older xbox kernal version 3944.

taint
yikes... thats the problem.... I can't GET into dash smile.gif

Sorry bout that. Didn't mean to insult you or anything like that.

It's just that about every tutorial out there tells you to backup your c: & e: before doing anything else and to put it in a safe place...

Glad you got it working now!

First of all, thank you all for keeping me sane and solving this problem for me!.. I did back up my system, but, my buddy flashed the wrong bios, and, after a quicko chango of the xbox, I still have my 120 gig hd with the wrong version of msxboxdash.xbe, thus causing the error 21. Could anyone please email me with a couple different versions of the msxboxdash??.. My box was made in June and has the version 1.0 chip in it and is flashed with matrix and evox 2.5. I am sure through trial and error I would find the right one.. I can't imagine their being more than 1 to say 3 versions of this msdashboard(hopefully!!).. If anyone can help, my email address is: chunlimeyers@hotmail.com
Just knowing is half the battle! beerchug.gif
p.s. Oh, just one more question: if I play a game that has "xbox live" on it, but never actually use any of the networking functions or xboxlive, the liveupdate.xbe should never come to play, or is this a wrong assumption??... And, if I did, would this cause my dash to not work?.. I really think after reading this post carefully, that I simply need to match the proper msxboxdash to my system. Thanks again for your time and help.
matbou
erexx, thanks a lot for your help !

The "error 21" solution:
After much too much brain work on this I figured it out!(and, why U had to "reformat" your C: partition, and use a backup from your original drive(reformatting is NOT necessary)).. We did learn about the 3 versions of the dash-ms.xbe.. however, this is the REAL reason it produces the "error 21" code... The dash-ms.xbe file calls to other files, called .xip .. !!!.. These .xip files are ESSENTIAL to run bill gates' dashboard... So, and here is the sketchy part for me, did my buddy, when he supposedly "backed up" my C partition to his HD simply not copy all the stuff, or, did he not bring it all back, or, did bill gates in one of his games decide to delete these essential .xip's!.. Either way, it doesn't matter, I got the files off of my buddies xbox(after realizing that NONE of em were on my xbox!, and, whala, it works perfect again!!.. The .xip files are default.xip, dvd.xip, mainmenu.xip,Memory_files.xip, et.. all get called from dash-ms.xbe... So, again, U can copy and recopy dash-ms.xbe, rename it anything U want(cuz, believe me, I did!!) and link it to your evox.ini under any name, but, without these .xip files, (put your own up a creek without a paddle analogy here!) beerchug.gif
rustyself
um, all i did was copy and paste the correct dash in my c drive.
bernards
I have a problem, I don't have any backups. I hope somebody can help by posting a zip backup file of their C.
bernards
Ignore my cry for help. It's solved.
upparoom
Well, I'm gonna have to send a cry for help. My original backup of my Xbox got fawked.

If anyone is willing to host a backup of their original files, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

The "error 21" solution:

You have got to be kidding.
Failure to follow instructions does not lead to any "solutions"
regulater7
K: represent the accualy kernal version thats running. like i can tell your running X2 bios,
erexx

Ok, thanks!
K = the current Bios Kernal Version

I had the error21 and I fix it with the right version of the dashboard (from my backup).
I've installed Xbox LIVE and the error came back. Is there a way to fix this? I know the LIVE installation change my dashboard.
