Evox Skins Not Working?How to fix the problem.I've noticed a large number of posts about this subject so I just wanted to clear up how to get your Evox skins working properly. I'm posting this in the main Evox Forum rather than the Skinning Forum just because this Forum seems to get more traffic and it will probably be more visible here.
If you have uploaded skins to your Xbox and they do not appear in your skins list or when you select them they do not show up correctly, make sure to follow the following steps in order to get the skin(s) working properly.
1.) Unzip or Unrar the SkinUse a program (I recommend
WinRAR) to unzip/unrar the downloaded skin. In some cases you will see only a folder in the RAR/ZIP file. In this case just extract that file to your PC.
In other cases you will see two or more files (one or two graphic files and a "skin.ini" rile -- sometimes a readme TXT or HTML file). In this case create a folder on your PC that has the EXACT name of the RAR/ZIP file or skin name. If the skin is called "EvoxBlue" then call your folder "EvoxBlue" using the same uppercase/lowercase letters. Then simply extract the RAR/ZIP files into that directory you have created.
2.) Upload Skin(s)Upload the extracted skin(s) to your Xbox. Put them into the following directory:
C:\Skin
-------
It's that simple!
If you have any further problems then check your skin.ini file to make sure the following names (shown in bold) are all identical:
| QUOTE |
SkinName "Evox1","Evox1"
[Skin_Evox1]
Text = 30,37,0.5,0x000000,0,"<Time>" Text = 28,39,0.5,0x808080,0,"<Time>"
Text = 620,420,0.5,0x000000,1,"<Name> V<Version>" Text = 618,422,0.5,0x808080,1,"<Name> V<Version>"
Text = 620,37,0.5,0x000000,1,"<CD>" Text = 618,39,0.5,0x808080,1,"<CD>"
Text = 30,420,0.5,0x000000,0,"<RDName>" Text = 28,422,0.5,0x808080,0,"<RDName>"

BarColor1 = 0x100903 BarColor2 = 0xF3DB91 BarAlpha = 0.5 MenuColor1 = 0xF3DB91 MenuColor2 = 0xD40C02 |
If any of those three occurances of the skin name are not exactly the same name as the folder the skin is in then the skin will not work (and you will most likely just get the default skin for Evox).
-------
To the best of my knowledge this is the best method for fixing Evox skin problems. If anyone has anything to add to this list (or sees anything wrong with my technical explanations of the problems) please post here or PM me and I will change it to keep this guide up to date.

I have an issue. I just a skin named ArkX because it wasn't working. All of my other skins worked previous to me deleting ArkX. I rebooted my XBOX after deleting ArkX and all of a sudden Digipanel doesn't display correctly, and I get plain default skin.
Here's a link to
my skins ini file.

How the skin looks

I know that this skin should work. I have already informed Team EvoX. and they have no clue how to reproduce this annoyance to say the least. I have also been flammed by some idiot over there. Looks like no one wants to help fix this annoying little bug. If you're reading this and want to help encourage Team EvoX to fix this bug .

Crazy idea: try changing the name of the skin. There is a TON of case sensitive stuff going on in that name (as well as special characters). Try naming the skin "digipanel" and adjusting the skin.ini file accordingly and see if that will help the skin to load. I have no idea why all that stuff would cause a problem, but it's worth a shot.
Post your results.

Excellent tutorial chefelf, but it doesn't quite cover the problem described in this thread:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=128856Like issues_i3oy mentioned above, I've had skins that worked just fine, then after adding/deleting other skins, that particular skin won't work (just get the original EvoX skin).
Also mentioned in the thread listed above, I use an EvoX boot disc to copy all my files onto client's xboxes after I've installed a modchip (this includes a skin directory with about 20 skins). Some xboxes will display certain skins, and others won't. Absolutely nothing has changed (skin directory name, skin name, skin ini, evox settings, evox ini, etc) between these as these are all copied from the same disc.
It's a very strange problem with which there seems to be no solution. And as you can see from the thread listed above, it seems as though there are quite a few people experiencing this.
Just thought I would mention this...
*edit*
issues_i3oy: after looking at the ini file for you skin, I'm surprised that it even worked for you at all. As chefelf mentioned above, your SkinName, Skin_, and the directory that it's saved in should all have the same name - which I've noticed your's doesn't. Try editing the references to 'Ultra-X_DiGiPaNeL_v2' to just 'DiGiPaNeL_v2'.

Okay, I'm stumped here. I have EvolutionX 3995, and I have uploaded several skins to a newly created c:\skin\ directory. The skins are in their own directories, named as they were extracted from their rars and zips. I have checked each skins ini and all three names as referenced in the tutorial are the same. I use Evox's reboot option to restart the system and the Skins option under System Utilities still only shows the original skin. I have softmodded this box and it is running the evox m7 bios. Any ideas on how to get evox to see these new skins. I know I'm probably missing something obvious, but after fooling with this for two hours it doesn't seem like it. Someone please shine some light on what I'm doing wrong.

I had a similar problem with skins not showing up in the Evox skin menu when trying to change skins. I never deleted any of these non-working skins, so I didn't run into the problem of OTHER skins that WERE working, before the deletion of the non-working one(s), not working afterwards. However, following the instructions on this thread's initial post I was able to fix ALL of my non-working skins. During my testing I found out a few things about entries in the skin.ini file that aren't EXACTLY as suggested by the initial post, as follows:
| QUOTE |
SkinName "EvolutionX","Evox1"
[Skin_Evox1]
Text = 30,37,0.5,0x000000,0,"<Time>" Text = 28,39,0.5,0x808080,0,"<Time>"

The name in
blue is what is displayed in the menu scrolldown list when selecting a new skin within Evox and does
NOT have to match the names in
green nor
red nor the name of the folder the skin files are in. The names in
red MUST match the name of the
FOLDER the *.jpg & skin.ini files are in and does
NOT have to match the other colored names. The line enclosed in
# is only needed when there is a separate .jpg file (used for loading/launching apps) apart from the .jpg file used for the
MAIN menu. In a few of my skins I found a separate .jpg file for launching/loading yet no reference to it (the Launch= line was missing) in the skin.ini file. This doesn't cause the skin to not work, it only causes the
MAIN .jpg to be used for eveything. An important thing to note is that these names are
NOT case-sensitive!

Excellent info KleptoMod. I'll have to double-check my skins again, but the part that really has me baffled is that the skin will work on one machine, but not another (exact same files - nothing changed between them).
Also,... you never explained what the names in green are for.

I was having issues even after going through all my skin.inis and verifiying each was correct per the 2 great posts (chefelf and KleptoMod) in this thread. So I did some experimenting. What I found was quite surprising.
When I loaded up the following skins: blackbolt, blackbolt console, blackbolt_elite, and blackbolt_S. Blackbolt console would always load as the default evox skin. If I deleted blackbolt console, then blackbolt would load as the default evox skin. When I deleted blackbolt, the skin above it alphabeticly in the skin menu would load as a default. This went on and on until I was left with the Orignal skin at the top and all the skins below blackbolt_elite aphabeticly being fine. When I loaded the skins back up minus the two blackbolt skins (blackbolt and blackbolt console) all the skins worked pefectly. Adding the 2 blackbolt skin back re-created the problem I was having earlier. Even adding just 1 of the skins back caused the issue.
Conclusion: Somehow having more then 2 skins with the first 9 letters/character being the same, causes some kind of directory error. At least in my case this seems true. I have since added other skins and they worked fine.
This was done with Evox + 3935, X2 4983.67 and a Xecuter 2.3b lite+ chip.
Maybe this will be of some use to others. If anyone else can confirm this on their xbox, please do so. If anyone else has posted on this I haven't seen it, (nor did I really go looking). I just did this for the hell of it.

I'll have to check into that G0rd0z1||a. Because the problem I'm having is mostly with the Blackbolt skins (I've also got a few of them as well). You might be onto something...
Can anyone else confirm this?
G0rd0z1||a
Jul 14 2004, 02:37 AM
Ok I did some more testing...
My little experiment started with verifying that every skin worked prior to starting. All 20 skins worked.
Next I edited 4 different skin inis. I used the following skins: ArcX, Armageddon, Armageddon Widescreen, and AtomGuy. I renamed them As follows ArcX = Armageddon1, and AtomGuy = Armageddon2. The others stayed the same. The Skin inis were also updated to relect the changes.
So.... Now I have 4 test skins with the first 10 characters being the same. Next these 4 skins were added to the skin folder on my xbox. Rebooted and... They all worked.
So this disproved my earlier attempt to figure this damn thing out.
So I then removed the 4 test skins. Since I already had Blackbolt Console and blackbolt_S loaded I decided to test it again with these skins. So I added blackbolt and blackbolt_elite to the mix. Rebooted... and blackbolt loads as the default Evox skin.

So now I'm wondering if its something specific the blackbolt skins I have. Yes I checked the ini file to make sure it was correct. And when I deleted just the blackbolt skin a different skin, named X OSX, loaded up as the default skin. Only minutes before it had worked, prior to deleting the blackbolt skin. (Whenever I changed something I went through all the skins to verify functionality).
In order to fix this I deleted all my skins, rebooted, and added all my favorites minus blackbolt and blackbolt_elite. Every single skin worked.
So I will be focusing in on these four specific skins: blackbolt, Blackbolt Console, blackbolt_elite, and blackbolt_S. I think renaming and adjusting the inis will solve it. If someone else has time, lets get some independent confirmation here. I hope this leads somewhere. Damn wild goose chases.

Nice work G0rd0z1||a... it seems as though you might be onto something. I haven't had the time to mess around with it, but I had changed my red blackbolt skin (which would only boot on some machines) from blackbolt_console_red to blackbolt_red and it seems to work just fine so far (I'm actually using it as the default skin on my EvoX boot disc). So that might have helped... dunno...
If anyone else that has been having this problem can confirm whether they've been using the Blackbolt skins, it would certainly help to narrow things down. But I can't see what the heck would be so different about the Blackbolt skins that would cause this (I've gone through the ini files a billion times!).
G0rd0z1||a
Jul 14 2004, 04:12 AM
Ok here is what I found... After deleting all my skins I loaded in the following: Blackbolt, Blackbolt Console, blackbolt_S and blackbolt_elite. This caused blackbolt to load the default skin. So I deleted them all rebooted and loaded blackbolt by itself. Rebooted selected blackbolt as a skin... tadah worked. So I know its not the skin. Load all four back in and blackbolt loads with the default. So I'm back at square 1.
In keeping variables to a minimum I continue to use the same four test subjects. This time I rename each to something similar to the original name but not quite.
Blackbolt = Boltb; Blackbolt Console = Blackconsole; blackbolt_elite = elite blackbolt; and blackbolt_S = Sblackbolt. Each ini was changed to match. Alone BoltB loaded fine. BoltB + Blackconsole = ok. BoltB + Blackconsole + elite blackbolt = Boltb loading as default skin. This is beyond me in terms of explaining it. Without a confirmation from another member I'm forced to assume its some bug associated with my specific hardware/software. Since I like the Blackbolt Console better then blackbolt I'll use that with blackbolt_S and not blackbolt_elite. Those two have the extra details anyways and using them together has not caused one skin to screw up. I hope this has been productive in some manner. As for me, I have a problem free box that I can live with.

Nice work G0rd0z1||a!!! You really put some work into it! Your testing gave me an idea. What if the problem ist not the name of the skin, but name of the picture! I will test it and see if anything is happening! By the way, it seems like the blackbold skins are the trouble makers!!!

Ok, brand new here, so please, slap me if this is a stupid question, but I FTPed to my xbox, and after reading about problems with skins, I decided that I should download them all, and delete them on the box, and try one at a time to find the problem. So I deleted all the skin folders in c:/Skin, and yet I reboot, and they are all still there. I disconnected and reconnected through the ftp, definitely not there, but... I dunno, is there an alternate place that it may be, or a way for me to check where the system is set for skins?

I think I made some further step in putting this bug in the corner.
People who code EVOX can have a look and probably find it.
I invested a couple of hours and more than 50 (warm) reboots of my X, plus 3 beers and a good cigar.
I just used a "brutal" approach: testing and testing.
Here my findings:
You all already suspected "blackbolt_elite". I picked up also another skin which could make my tests less annoying: "AssPaper2".
1) Each of them work perfectly, if they are alone into the 'skin' Dir.
2) If they are together, only two skins into the Dir, there are two cases:
-a- if 'blackbolt' has been loaded into the Dir first, then there are no problems.
-b- if 'AssPaper2' has been loaded first, then it won't work.
3) If you want to make them work together, even if loaded into the Dir in the wrong order ... cancel the first comment line into skin.ini of 'blackbolt' (= "# Designed from
http://www.xbox.com's new layout.")
4) Well, in reality you can just move that comment line at the beginning of the file: it looks like EVOX doesn't like comment lines between "SkinName" and "[Skin_Bb Elite]".
At least this works for me and my dozen of selected skins ("AssPaper2", which I loved and thank, doesn't belong to my official collection).
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Ok, i am pretty sure I am having the same problem. I just deleted 8 of my 10 skins and added 5 more. Now I can only see the two originals that I left there. After looking though the files I noticed that the two originals have a skin.xml instead of a skin.ini. I am pretty sure they were copied with a skin.ini when I ftp'ed them there.
Any ideas? The names are correct in the ini files.

i can confirm that it is in fact a bug.
i had the same problem, and its not only skins that start with the same letter
for example.
my jlh skin worked perfectly fine
the one abot it halo 2 was working fine aswell
well the one below jlh didnt work so i decided to deleted
(didnt work, meaning that the original default evox skin was showing rather than the new skin)
after deleteing adn rebooting, i noticed my JLH skin didnt work.
so it was kinda odd, but i wasnt too attached to the JLH skin anyways. so i deleted that one as well, BUT THEN after rebooting, i found that my HALO 2 skin now wasnt working properly.
i come to conclusion that, there always is one that isnt working, i think it might be the position of the skin!. not sure tho
for example
skin 1
skin 2
skin 3 <--- then that one doesnt work later
skin 4 <-- if that is deleted
skin 5
and so forth. not sure tho. but it's really annoying.
i don tknow wat to try anymore.
if anyone knows how to fix it, it'd be great.

ok guys i'm kinda an amatur here and having mixed probs. probable due to one thing but i'll go over what happened.. the XB was working great (has been for about 10 months) trainers skins everything ( well as much as i used anyways LOL ) couple of day ago i try copyin a trainer to the XB but not matter what i did i couldn't get it to link with my computer (i've done it heaps of time but it just wouldn't work for me this time) so i got sick of it and burn the file to a Rewritable cd. put it in and copyed the file over. it finished but locked up. it also said the trainer was 25 MB big which it isn't so i got annoyed after about ten mins of wait for something and turned it off. waited a little while then turned it back on everytime it went to load Evox it restarted so i went and got the new Evox off r friend and installed it now i can't get trainers or change to new skin only the one it installs with. now what makes it harder. THERE IS NO i mean non nuda zip zilch no Evox.ini or Skin.ini in fact theres no ini file on the system maybe in the game/apps folders but no were else but evox will load play game and have very limited options

Hello, My friend and I modded our xBox's and we both know a lot but we have one problem. He has a 1.6 and I have a 1.3. We both have evo 3995. The problem is that we both can't add stuff to our skins folder. We can add anything anywhere but in the E:/Dashboard/Skins folder we can't add or rename. Can anyone help.

I would like to add something. I have only read the first post so I don't know if someone else has mentioned this.
First look into all the skin folders and make sure then have the skin.ini file (i think its called that).
if you do not see it go to tools\folder options (on the menu bar of that window) then go to view and make sure the dot that says show hidden files and folders is marked, then click save.
no If you see the skin.ini but it is faded out that means it is hidden, and your xbox can't find these hidden files so if you have any skins that have hidden Skin.ini (I downloaded a lot of em) you have to make them unhidden.
to do that, just right click on the skini.ini and click on properties, once in the properties menu just uncheck the hidden option and click ok. And now they should work, or else you have an even bigger problem

Sorry if this is repetitive. Ive read all posts on this thread, and i posted one reply describing my problem in depth here....
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...5entry3308715I want simple answers to these questions. Newbie!
Do you change skins with your xbox controller or through editing ini files on the hd with your pc?
If you use your xbox via a menu how do i edit my ini to display the menu, or upgrade my evox.
If you edit ini files to distplay skins then what files do you edit.
I can post my evox.ini file if need. feel free to contact me via email if you do not wish to post a reply.
thanks very much

First, for the softmodders, the directory for skins, if setup using default settings, is E:\Skins. That made all the difference in the world for me! So if you are having problems, and cant see ANY skins other than the original Evolution X skin, try dropping the skins folder into the E: drive rather than C:
I am ALSO looking for more information, about adding files, be it skins or anything else, to the xbox via a CD or DVD. If anyone could help with this, it would make it much easier for me to upgrade my father-in-laws softmodded box, without having to drag it to my house.
