Full Version: After Fan-mod... Xbox Gets Hot

Hi,

i changed the back fan of my box with a new, very silent one (Blacknoise Noiseblocker S2) (11-19db(A)).
When i run him directly on 12v, he's too loud for my ears, and when i put him on the mainboard 3pin (of the orignal fan) he's very silent.
Silent, but the xbox gets hot. up to 65 degrees (CPU) and 52 degrees (GPU) seems to hot for me, what would you say?

I read the FAQ which says 65 is the limit for the cpu and 49 for the gpu. dry.gif

Now i'm worried about the lifetime of my box.
If it's possible i don't want to install a second fan in the side.

Thanks for your replies,
regards,

Matthias

are those degrees in Celcius? If its in Fahrenheit thats Really Low. Try re mounting your heatsink, and Put some new Thermal paste on the bottom of both HSFs
dylanbox
hi, they are in Celcius of course.

I never disassembled the heatsinks, i only changed the back stock fan.

i have the same problem with my fan too.

i did the stock 12V mod but then got a different fan for the lights and shit. then i did the 12V mod to my new fan and it gets like 15 degrees (F) hotter then with the stock fan in there sad.gif

wtf?!
dylanbox
i hate this. now the box is really really silent... (i could sleep next to it) but its just a tick too hot for me.

Is there an idea except installing an additional fan or make this fan louder?
hirme
loll you want the fan louder?
replace your old one...
dylanbox
eh? i want an idea EXCEPT making the fan louder wink.gif

wow, i have had no problems, i bought a fan that has a 3 pin and plugs into my power supply
it plugs into the muther board so it can tell the fan what rpm to run at and then plugged the power into my 12v supply and when i put my hand on my xbox its always cool even after 14 hours of xbox live gameing.
and its quit.
plus i put a fan under my hard drive.
but tho i have the oldest xbox, one of the originals, and i have noticed sutile differences between the old version and new versions
i also have a fan on my heat sink to lol

couldnt you just use xbtool to increase the fans speed using the stock 3pin
dylanbox
hi, i measured the voltage at the stock 3pin, which is 12V.
I guess they built in some resistors so the fan doesn't get the maximum power.

So xbtool woudln't do anything...

Are you sure its not blowing air in, instead of sucking it out. Just a thought, I'm not trying to be an ass or any thing.
dylanbox
yeah i'm sure... as i said, the fan is pretty quiet as i'm running it at 1500rpm (11db(A)).
if i turn the pot up (when i'm having it on the 12v of the harddisk) the fan gets "loud" (to me wink.gif) but keeps the box cool.

Yes, XBtool would do something. Modify your BIOS to run at a higher speed (default is 20%) and you'll get more power to the on-board (motherboard) fan connector, therefore making your fan run faster. How did you think those software hacks sped up the stock fan? The same changes will affect your mod fan too.
Takk
check the blade angles, the newer ones might just not be moving enough air...
Lightning|Striker
You sure the fan's blowing air the right direction?

one time i forgot to replug in my fan when i turned tha xbox on. tha CPU temp got to 185F (85C)!!!!!!!! blink.gif

hah then i reattached tha fan n tha temp went back down pretty fast
Pullout Method
Ohh the fan fun-ness I've had.

Ran with no fan.(Because I forgot to re-attatch) in my first plexi case.(Which now sags)Got up to about 100 or so C and then the xbox shut off.

The blowing in/out thing is a myth. I've tried mounting an 80mm blowing in, got the CPU down to like 40c and the Mobo went up to about 50c. With it blowing out, they both sit at about 45c.

My suggestions would be to do the following
1 as everyone's said, set the fan speed in the bios
2 might want to set it in your dash too.(I know Unleash X allows you to, not sure about others)
3 Make sure all the vents are unblocked. May sound obvious, but I've mannaged to cover them up once or twice over the course of a mod.

Just so you get a little understanding, the Xbox outputs 12v at all times to the fan connector on any stock Xbox, but it uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to rapidly turn the ground connection on and off. So the fan isn't powered less, it's just powered less of the time. The good part about that is that it is software/firmware controlled, therefore using XBTool you can up the fan speed from the average 7v speed to normal 12v speed or anywhere in between.
